Pre-season does not necessarily tell you a lot about regular season rotation, it is a team people like James Harden average 15-20 mpg. And If the league is as competitive as you have said, most -if not all- rotation players will be taken by the 240th pick. I think it was Flip Murray who broke out during a pre-season (for a very short-lived glory, it needs to be said) and skewed the hell out of everybody's perception.

Lastly, no one addresses how people who get to be awake during games can pick up players breaking into the rotation before anyone else does, which makes this whole deal about the unfairness of drafting during pre-season seem a bit off.

I mean, how is it unfair? Do we know beforehand who will have the 274th pick and which 14 mpg player will break out while the 274th pick is on the clock? The answer is pretty much no.

I see what you are saying, but it's not our fault you don't live in the U.S.....MERICKA!!! :D
I'm kidding of course.
On the bright side, the worst offender to the "add him immediately after a good game" tactic is arguably WB...who will be in Italy this season.
I'm not arguing for or against any draft time, I'll draft whenever...I just wanted to make some jokes about MERICKA !

I wouldn't mind a bit if all free agents had to be claimed off waivers. Just to even things out for folks in other time zones.

Seems fair to me. But, if they don't mind the current system I'm fine with it as well.

actually all FAs on waivers could help with streaming as well. I would be backing this up.

I don't have a problem with the current FA pick-up arrangement. I just mentioned it to illustrate that the obsession to over-control everything is a bit nonsensical.

Just because there are some built-in advantages in current FA system for some gm's doesnt mean we should mess up with a perfectly working draft system. If you have any suggestions to fix the problems with the FA system, we are all listening. However showing it as an example does not work at all. We are trying to eliminate these sort of advantages, not to spread them into other parts of league activities that have been working just fine for 10+ years. Furthermore I disagree with the so-called problem in free agency system. The end of the games usually coincide with morning in our timezones so it is quite easy to check the scores when you wake up. Some west coast games usually are still in progress in the morning in our timezone.

Regarding the over-control issue, I'd argue that's what you guys are doing by trying to postpone the draft start date to a date that is as latest as possible.

Alright let's roll with 25th of August and I'll do my best to assist Brian whenever he needs.

Well that sucks...instead of getting my starting 5-7 drafted, I'll probably only get 1-2 picks in. That is, of course, unless we have the unofficial start to the draft once we know our picks, like we've done the last several years. If we're allowed to start drafting without a time limit once the draft positions are known, that might make things a little easier.

If we move it one week later (25th August), how does it work for Brian (wb), Woody and theman in terms of convenience?

One more alternative I'd like to suggest: Starting the draft at 15th of September (right after the world cup is finished so gm's won't be put in a disadvantageous position due to injuries which might occur during the world cup)

Aug 25 (or even the 20th) wortk better for me.

Curtis Lemansky wrote:The time limit per pick definitely have to be shorter in case if we vote for a mid september start. As sabonis pointed out, we need to be done with the draft when the pre-season starts (4th of October). So keep that in mind whilst weighing out these options.

Why does it have to be done before preseason? Regular season yes.

People in Europe have a built-in advantage with wavier pickups as they can allow the play to become a FA and not sqander their waiver priority.
