In a bold move this morning, George Santos rose to demand the Speaker's job, based on his long experience as a congressman.

a facetious comment (not original) re Jennifer Rubin's most recent column.

More seriously, Santos is probably trying to figure out how to fill out
the various disclosure forms incoming House members are required to do.

Desantis/Santos ticket! Perfect replacement for Trump - keep the momentum going.

It's kinda sad when the GOP nominates candidates that are members of
a group some of them like to fundraise in opposition (non-white, non-straight, non-Christian)
as if that proved they really are okay those 'others' having a voice in how the country is run,
only to later discover these same candidates (Walker/Santos) are a joke
that keeps coming around, a bad joke.

Ugh, if Hamlin's heart wasn't beating for 9 minutes that is not good news at all. I hope they managed to keep blood flowing to his brain that entire time, otherwise the outcome is not going to be good.

TGW wrote:I was watching the local DC TV newscast the other day (the one with Joe Clair) and they had two consultants on representing the two parties. The Democratic consultant said that Wes Moore should be the democrat's presidental candidate for 2024 when Biden steps down, which of course shocked the newscasters and Joe Clair. The Republican consultant said that ultimately, Trump and Desantis could and would be the ticket in 2024.

I think the Democrats better prepare for (a) Biden stepping down, and (b) going against a Trump/Desantis ticket.

Lol there’s zero chance that Biden doesn’t run. Democrats would be shooting themselves in the foot if Biden doesn’t run. He’s had a very productive 4 years, passed tons of legislation, defied midterm history and most importantly had the incumbent advantage which bodes well for reelection.

And on the same hand there’s zero chance Desantis adds Trump to the ticket. Trump has the stench of loser all over him and if he doesn’t win the Republican Primary as much of a ass kisser as Desantis is, he’s not torpedoing his campaign by putting Trump as his VP. I hope that Trump follows through on his promise to run as a third party, an absolute gift to the Democratic Party.

It is kind of a logical progression of the process that got the GOP to the party of Trump.

Golfy McBonespurs is a total coward. He’ll endorse whoever wins after the
fact and claim it was his endorsement that made the difference.

Who else has even close to 218 votes? This is anarchism, pure and simple, the sort of behavior from terrorists who just want to burn democracy down. As my son pointed out, similar to what the nazis did to the Reichstag before Hitler was made chancellor - cause as much chaos as possible and then blame the ensuing catastrophe on non-nazis.

And now I read House GOP is going to dismantle the Office of Congressional Ethics

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/01/04/house-republicans-congressional-ethics-office/

about this Rubin writes

The MAGA majority’s current plan to gut the OCE is telling. As Norman Eisen, who served as ethics counsel in the Obama administration, observed, “When there is a change of control in a branch of our government, incoming leaders usually like to signal their commitment to ethics as the first order of business. But the new House GOP majority is doing the exact opposite.” They might see the tactic as a short-term solution to shield Republican members from ethics investigations, but, as Eisen notes, “the Republican caucus is inviting more corruption in their ranks.”

Consider the case of George Santos, the New York Republican entering Congress with a litany of scandals. Do Republicans really want to make it easier for the habitual liar to remain in their midst? “Maybe that’s the point,” Eisen muses. But that would undoubtedly come back to haunt them. The caucus — which includes a number of members who have expressed sympathy for insurrectionists and the promotion of the “big lie” that the 2020 election was stolen — is not one to take the oath of office seriously. Asking Republicans to exercise personal restraint is like asking a tiger to go vegan.
