And this is probably the most salient point. Who is going to rescue the tax code?

And the corporate tax cuts were a significant and meaningful tool to spur the economy. If they had only done that - they would have looked terrific (especially if they had gradually lowered the rates).

And if they had also used the repatriation in the right way, that would have also been significant and meaningful.

So, as much as I want to bury the Rs because they failed - I don't want to lose track of the things that did right - or should I say, I hope the Ds don't lose track of this... just raising rates across the board is also not helpful.

I think you're being incredibly optimistic (could use a more pejorative word there) to expect that
the 'honest' GOP (once bought they stay bought) would do any of those things in the right way.
Try pointing to another recent example where they did things the right way as opposed to the way
their 1% donor class insisted they should.

As for the issue of having a singular focus on tax reduction, nope, that's not the dem playbook either.
You can accuse them of other sorts of irresponsibility, but not of that one.

There is no Wilbur Mills in Congress. At some point, we may need to make the tax code incentive-free - probably taking out most - if not all - deductions and credits.

let it go. Geeeez.

Ummm, what? She's very important. She's one of the most followed and well known politicians in America. She speaks for an entire generation (millennials). The GOP's obsession is ridiculous, but it's definintely strategic. AOC is a rising star in politics, and they don't have one.

dckingsfan wrote:She represents the Rs best chance to keep the Senate, turn purple seats in the house and keep POTUS. Sadly, the Rs aren't stupid... they will keep beating up the GND until people run from it.

And this is the issue.

Old Democrats largely ignore her.
Young liberals deify her.
Republicans stalk and demonize her.

She's been in office 7 weeks.

Well, they did do the right thing with corporate tax rates in the wrong way... guess that is as far as I can defend them.

My initial response is to point out that this is nuanced. It is just as easy for the Ds to fall into the same trap (continue to obfuscate the tax code, just raise taxes all at once instead of incrementally, concentrate on rates and not optimizing receipts). Remember, we just saw two proposals one from the GND folks to raise marginal rates and another on a wealth tax. But would (if implemented as represented) be worse than what just happened with this recent tax bill.

I think that should be chilling.

This - and investment income needs to be treated the same way... only when we do this will we have a chance of having a fair tax code.

TGW, We're in agreement here.

People seem to equate criticism of Israeli policy with being against Jewish people as a whole.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

This wouldn't be as big an issue if Howard Dean said it. Because a a hijab wearing muslim women said it, it's anti-Semitic and she has to apologize.

The Democrats are only helping to promote the rampant Islamophobia in this country. NBCNews did a poll on what Democrats voters don't want in a presidential candidate. Something like 49% of D voters said "being muslim" was #1 on their list. It's no shocker with decisions like this.

The same poll showed an extremely negative reaction towards the word "socialist".

Old attitudes die hard. :nonono:

I can't find the poll now :nonono: but it showed that there was a negative reaction toward socialist but a positive reaction to social programs.

The author suggested that most equate socialist to dictator. And since the definition is: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods - there might be a reason for the misunderstanding. You could have a democracy that is not capitalist.

But there ways a high approval rating for "social programs". People equated them with Medicare and Social Security.

My two cents...

Agreed this is just stupid. What the Democrats need to do is protect this woman because she’s the target of Islamophobic attacks.
