Leonard and Faried are the "kick me" examples of what the Wizards missed in that draft.
Yeah, I think the larger point was how the board was so against Vesely pre-draft and that we would have taken anybody over him and we would have been better-off.
Yep. Leonard may have been picked a bit lower than projected, maybe Vucevic too. I wonder if their draft position projections affected EG's choices, maybe hoping one of them would slip down to the 18th pick. The real question is why Vesely got rated so high. I recall that a large number of draft reporters seemed to think Vesely to the Wizards was a certainty. I don't understand any better now than I did then why that was the plan, but there seems to be a shortage of flexible thinking around the Wizards front office, like as soon as they decided to take him, their work was done.
What if the Wizards had the 7th pick, or if they had the 6th pick, but Vesely was not in the draft? Who would they have chosen? My guess is they would have taken Singleton, who I saw projected as high as 5 or 6 in some mock drafts. If they chose him, I'll bet they would still not have gotten Faried at 18. Probably would have taken Motiejunas or Mirotic, to justify EG's Euro-junkets.
