Did anyone know these things about Nick?

Post#1 » by The Fax » Wed Jan 12, 2011 6:18 am

There are always those players you just hope succeed. In this year's NBA Draft, Nick Young is a player you should be rooting for and cheering on.

When Young was only five years old, his oldest brother Charles Jr. was shot and killed by a member of the Bloods, L.A.'s notorious street gang. He'd been mistaken for a member of a rival gang while exiting his college classroom.

Young's older brother John suffered a breakdown following the murder, and was later committed to a mental institution.

Young then flunked out of Hamilton High when he was a freshman and transfered to Dorsey where he found himself in a class with members of the Bloods gang, who had killed his older brother. Young dropped out of school after he stopped going to his classes.

At Young's third high school, he found his niche. As a senior, he averaged 27 points and 11 rebounds. However, due to NCAA academic needs, Young needed to raise his SAT to 820. Young, a special education student, had three chances to raise his SAT, but he failed on the first two attempts. The third time was the charm and he was able to go to USC.

Nick Young has been through so much that the NBA should be a breeze. I wish Nick Young the best and hope he becomes a great NBA player.

Man, you'd never know it by looking at him. I used to get annoyed when I saw him smiling and giggling all the time, but I honestly had no idea what he'd been through. He's a real tough dude and I'm glad he chose not to give up. This kid is a real soldier on and off the court and I think the whole league is starting to find out.

Yup- they made a documentary about it. I watched it when they aired it on ESPN2.

Here's the trailer.

Unfortunately, the movie is not currently available since the developers of the movies have not officially released it.

It's kinda ridiculous that guys need a certain SAT score in order to play basketball. So you're telling me if Nick didn't get a certain SAT score he wouldn't have gotten a scholarship and would (most likely) not be in the NBA? Because of a test that quizzes him on vocab that nobody ever uses and geometry problems? I really don't like how the NCAA works.

The NCAA is a college association. It requires a certain aptitude to make it into college and it looks bad for the NCAA's when guys who clearly aren't academically qualified make it to the school just because they can play basketball. An 800 SAT score isn't insurmountable. I kinda like that the have a minimum requirement so young basketball players in high school have to spend at least some time focusing on getting an education.

The only part that doesn't seem fair to me is the requirement that you can't play in the NBA straight out of high school. It's like they force you to play a year in college, but then insert an academic hurdle that some guys can't get over.

Yeah, I saw the doc also. It was very good. His HS played against Jordan Farmer's HS and they were rivals. He also played in HS agaisnt guys I saw in College and so on. In the doc his brother would dissapear & his family would be panicing looking for him but then they would find him in a mental home. They would try to take him home but he would say that he liked it there and wanted to stay. I thought the guy who killed his brother would be this super thug but he really seemed more like a nerd like the dude Carlton from the Fresh Prince. It was cool though. Definitely a good doc
