Some substantive nuts and bolts basketball talk from the NBC Wizards team (Miller, Hughes, and Patsos):

A bit of the party line, but wide-ranging and addresses many of the biggest questions among the Wizards faithful. Miller is bearish on Isaiah Thomas, but I couldn't tell if that was based on anything he has seen this summer or just a general sense. Also, though not really behind the scenes scoop, some pretty decent insight into the issues around keeping Bradley happy.

Apparently, whatever team Justin Robinson is on is winning the pick up games this Summer. That's good news.

But... maybe Layman wasn't actually available to us? & we'd just added 7 guys & re-inked Bryant. Average age of those 8 guys: 21 years old. I can see why Tommy hit on C.J. Miles. I still don't love the deal. But, he'll be here & gone in a blink. Plus... maybe someone will give us a R2 pick for him at the deadline?

This points up the key fact about the off season: we had nothing to work with! Our only asset was the #9 pick. & some $$ to trade for a R2 pick. We had no trade assets. We didn't have a ton of cap room to spend on established players. Basically, we had nothing -- plus a negative (Howard). & we used that "nothing + a negative" to acquire 8 players: Robinson, Matthews, Booth, Bonga, Jones, Wagner, Bertans & Miles.

In that sense, I guess how good the off season looks in retrospect will come down to how many of the 6 young guys on that list develop into good NBA players. E.g. if there are 4 NBA players among them, it'll look like a triumph! Even 3 would be amazing.

I don't think we missed out on anything by not getting Layman. His shooting last season - 64.6% on 2's - isn't sustainable for him. He was a frustratingly average player at MD, and he was horrific in limited minutes in his 1st 2 season in the NBA. It was Small Sample Size theatre, but still... he had over 400 minutes and was arguably the worst player in the NBA in that time frame.

He was horrific his first season, & he was well below average (i.e. bad not horrific) his 2d season.

His 3d season he did get a lot better -- 3 pt. % improved, rebounding improved, & 2-point % really jumped as you point out. Plus, those numbers were on way more minutes. Plus they would still have been good overall, even if he'd been 10% lower on his 2pt %.

Still, I wouldn't want to make any big claims for him. Just a question of how much value Miles has, being an expiring player & old. Clearly, Layman's a more valuable asset to own than Miles. Though... if we somehow trade Miles at the deadline for a reasonably high R2 pick, the assessment might have to change.

&, again, we have no idea whether Layman was available to us!

You'd think there'd be an official schedule available, so that it'd be easy to find out when TC starts. But... google gives me nothing.

Last year it was on the 29th.

Training camp starts Oct 1st. The teams playing overseas preseason games (not us) start training camp Sept 28th.
