Malcolm Brogdon. Wizards guard.

Post#1 » by doclinkin » Sun Jul 7, 2024 10:33 pm

I was waiting to see if he was a quick add to a 2nd deal, but it looks like we are starting the year with Brodgon on the roster. At least according to Wiz reporters. link.

Malcolm Brogdon is highly likely to begin the regular season with the Wizards. All that talk about Washington intending to immediately re-route Brogdon after Deni Avdija’s trade to Portland was premature. Brogdon can still play effectively, and he did a good job last season as a mentor to the Trail Blazers’ youngsters. Wizards executives see a benefit to having him on the roster.

So welcome to DC Malcolm Brogdon :wizard:

I like him as a mentor for Bub Carrington. Both have a physical if floorbound game, using shifty dribbles and craftiness to get open. Both use their body well to protect the dribble or bump a guy off to clear space for their shot. Brogdon has the outside shot and inside finishing skills that Bub has not displayed. I'd love to see the two of them on court together at times to see how they can play off each other. I think both will work well with Jonas setting picks.

Funny. If we hang on to Anthony Gill even as a developmental coach, these two were teammates for 3 years at Virginia. So you know they know how to play defense, and possibly help to coach it.

Brogdon is a good player when healthy, which is precisely why I want him moved. The fact that he hasn't been moved is probably because nobody wants to pay more than SRP's for him.

A starting lineup of (see below) isn't horrible honestly. I think that lineup is better than Brooklyn, the Bulls, Detroit, and possibly Charlotte too.

PG: Poole
SG: Brogdon
SF: Bilal
PF: Kuzma
C: Jonas

Ugh, even if we want to tank, I think the dregs of the east are even worse than we are LOL.

I'm really ambivalent about this. I moved from DC to Charlottesville 35 years ago and have followed UVA bball ever since. We've had some really good players come through here after Ralph but imo no one was more fun to watch and root for than Malcolm. He's a total basketball maestro, always completely in control of the game, always thinking two steps ahead of his opponents. As a person, he's even more impressive. You'll never meet a more kind and thoughtful person.

The downside is obviously that with him and Jonas in the lineup, we could actually be decent and win too many games in a must tank year.

Assuming they are healthy, Kuzma and Brogdon will have active trade markets and we'll be able to move them if we're winning too much.

I was about to say, as Joshua says ^^^ if we play it right, there's no down side. If the vets are playing well they increase their trade value. Meanwhile young players get to learn from skilled guys. Taste winning. Then we clear out the roster with trades and young players get increased PT. And have the young pups take the wheel and show what they've picked up.

Bub Carrington says he learns by watching more than drills and coaching. Claims Carmelo Anthony as one of his role models & tutors in the game. He played on Melo's AAU squad and you can see Melo in his pull up and midrange game. I'd like him to get a mentor for defense and interior finishing. Two skills Brogdon can exemplify. If Bub learns from Malcolm's guile, poise and ability to read a situation, then he gets a jump start on the rest of his career. Ditto the little teardrop Brogdon pulls out once in a while. Though Tyus is the master of that one.

Yes the Brogdon to Jonas pick and roll game should be solid and reliable. Sarr and Bub should both be able to pick something up from it. See it, try it, do it. Refine with repetition.

Coach Keefe knows much of this job will be about training rookies and young players to succeed in the league. I fully expect line-ups with mix and match combinations of youth + veterans.

Would be great if we keep Brogdon for half a year, then trade him for something good. I thought the same thing about Tyus Jones last year, though. And here we are.

*Poole is a terrible defender and one of the worst defending starting PGs in the league.
*Jonas was the worst defending big according to EPM of anyone that received more than 15 minutes a night.
*Kispert is one of worst big minute defensive SFs in the league.
*if Tyus returns, he's just as bad defensively as Jordan Poole.
*Backup Cs Bagley & Holmes are well below average at defending the C position
*Kuzma & Brogdon are non-descript defenders at best.

We have no shot in hell of being competitive with this type of defense. We have too many vets, but outside of maybe Brogdon, they aren't the type of vets playoff teams are clamoring for and they won't help the Wizards win.

Oh, I'm not saying we'll be competitive most nights (our defense will be as you pointed out horrendous) against everyone else in the NBA, but the Nets will be much worse than us IMO. They are in the pole position for worst team in the NBA. Chicago has no offense whatsoever. Detroit still looks like a mess unless Cade makes a leap and Harris gives them something tangible. Charlotte probably doesn't want to win and LaMelo has legit durability issues. The west will be a bloodbath most nights as only Utah & Portland are a tier below as rebuilding teams (Wemby takes the Spurs out of the conversation).

The clear "tanking" teams are the Nets, Bulls, Jazz, Hornets, Blazers, Pistons, and us.

Thoughtful, brainy, measured, calm. A good mentor for a young squad. And DC should be a great place to play and live for a guy with a masters in public policy. And his offensive game is exactly what you'd hope to see Bub develop into. Floorbound but shifty, strong, high Iq.

I think I remember at one point the Wiz were talking about trading one of our #9 picks for Brogdon. Don't remember if it was the Rui year or the Deni year. Like Trevor Ariza, Jeff Green, and Jahidi White, this guy was destined to be a Wiz.

For those of you who haven't seen him play much, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. He is an incredibly composed, complete basketball player... if he plays.

It was in 2022 and Johnny Davis was drafted.

Given the past, a "rolling" 6-8 weeks is the best bet.

Brodgon is made of glass. In 8 career seasons, he has only exceeded 56 games 3 times. He has only exceeded 56 games once in the past 5 years. He has never played 2000 minutes in a season.

True enough -- he's averaged 1611 minutes a season. OTOH, note that KP has averaged 1587 minutes a year.

In fact, over the last 8 seasons, KP has only played 320 games overall, though that's a bit unfair, since two of those seasons he missed entirely. Leaving those 2 seasons out, KP has averaged 53 games a year.

He played 64 games for us in '22-23 & 57 for Boston last year -- his best 2 year stretch since his first 2 seasons in NY.

But, the last couple of years KP has become more durable (or luckier...?).

Brogdon's thumb injury suggests that he might not be on the same track... :(

I wasn't interested in watching him anyway. Nothing personal I would just rather play the young guys.
