but.... are we to assume oubre would have signed here on a one year deal to be the 6th wing on a rebuilding team? my guess is he wanted a multiyear deal to stay here
if we had to sign him to a multiyear deal, who would want to trade for that, given that 29 team had zero interest in him this summer.

yeah there really isn't any realistic argument for keeping him outside of narrative building or player favoritism

Even if you think this... he was free. We didn't have to trade anyone for him, no draft picks would have been sent for him and he is scoring 18 ppg on great efficiency. There isn't a player in the NBA right now scoring 15 ppg right now I wouldn't take on this team if he cost us nothing to acquire.

I don't think DeAngelo Russell is a good option for the Hornets either, but if we could trade the Lakers no players, no picks, no nothing for him? I would take him.

From a team building standpoint in the NBA today that is how you build a team. Otherwise, you end up having a salary cap 20-40 million less than 75% of the league and you wonder why you have no depth.

You know how nice it would be right now if a team offered a lottery protected first for Rozier and we had Oubre to take his mins? Miller moves to starter and Oubre can play off bench... Now we basically are saying we are tanking if we consider a trade like that for Rozier.

Nets call up and say hey you want Lonnie Walker? we don't want anything for him. Yes please.
Clippers offer us Russ making 3.8 million for free? Yes please.

All 81 guys averaging 15 ppg would be a nice addition to our team.

but instead were trying to figure out how to piece Bouknight, 2nd rounder and probably Ish Smith together to get a guy that makes 8 million because we mismanage assets so poorly.

The 15 PPG have to come from somewhere. Charlotte is currently 12th PPG, the problem is that they are 4th in PPG allowed. Adjusted for pace the defensive picture is less dire, but the team still scores the 12th most on average. Is Kelly Oubre improving the team's performance by scoring points?

Edit: And I think your bigger point is maybe asset usage, but I think fats pointed out really well Oubre's contractual reality in Charlotte. He's not just going to agree to a 1 year whatever deal so we can trade him for a 2nd as soon as he becomes tradable. This team is bad at asset management, it has been regularly since it's modern rebirth, it's very frustrating, but no one was beating down the front office door to sign and trade for Kelly Oubre or sign him outright in the offseason, so it's a weird hang up to have. We blew an entire draft and we do that regularly, that's a bigger franchise albatross.

Oubre signed a 1 year deal with Philly for 3 million. If you want to choose he would of not signed a 1/10 million for Charlotte over that. As I said it didn't even have to be Oubre we traded. It would have been so much easier to trade Rozier for Brogdon if we had Oubre as well. Same with Hayward, Oubre would of been able to take over the majority of their mins if they were hurt (already happening) or if we had a good offer for them in short term.

And yes I think having Oubre playing the 28 mins we gave to Ish, McGowens and Thor the other night we win that game instead of losing by 6.

Brogdon will be injured by the time Oubre would've been trade eligible because this is the Hornets and the team would've been stuck with Kelly Oubre not improving the defense, being a black hole on offense and sometimes being credited with winning games on a bad team that doesn't make the playoffs and is too good to have the best odds at a difference making draft pick.

I think the point JMAC is trying to make is that Oubre was one of the few playable players who could contribute available to us and we just went an opted for nothing. So now we are jammed because we can barely even make a trade without limiting our rotation even more.

The bigger blunder is somehow not resigning DSJ even though more was offered. How we were not able to convince him he’d have tons of playing time? He easily would’ve been playing more here than he is in Brooklyn.

Oubre was on of the few players who could contribute, but the Hornets are bad and he is bad, so how does it help instead of just playing younger guys to get them reps and see what you have if you're going to be bad anyway. Oubre doesn't positively impact the Hornets. With Oubre they would still be barely able to make a trade without limiting the rotation even more. No one is trading for Oubre as an asset. As a throw in contract in a hypothetical trade that the team isn't going to make because they aren't taking back more salary, okay, fine, whatever, maybe.

You do realize Oubre was the 5th leading scorer on the 43 win Hornets? He was 7th in win shares, 9th in VORP.
I would easily give him 10 million if he did that for us this year.

You act like he shot 27% from the field and we won 7 games when he played on the team. He is very clearly a functional NBA player. He was for us that year, is for Philly this year. but let's just only look at him when we were the 4th worst team in the league and he was forced to start and shoot 20 times per game....

This is such a takelock position by this entire board.
I called this out weeks ago that we were going to suck if we had to play McGowens, Thor etc and you guys told me that was wrong that even they would be better than chucker Oubre. Here we are 2-5 coming off a 20 pt loss to Wizards... but yeah you hold onto this take that everything is fine and Clifford should be figure out how to win with the worst bench in the league right now lol

I found this thread in case anyone wants to discuss Oubre.

Probably the best place for it, since he plays for that team now.

Great call, lets keep it about Hornets players here.

What did you guys think about the 38 mins from Ish, McGowens and Thor last night where they shot 0-3 for 2 points?
They combined had a plus/minus of -50. Good stuff.

7th in win shares(4th most minutes on team, -0.5 net ortg), stop the presses! He can be a contributor on a good team. These Hornets--especially in this moment--are not that.

I didn't tell you anything weeks ago, I was pretty sure the team would not be good and if they were, it would be futile because it means Miles is a contributor who will leave in the offseason and the Hornets will get nothing for him. I haven't said very much positive about Clifford... ever... and the team has a bad bench because the team is bad. I think the argument that Kelly Oubre, who we know isn't very good at winning basketball games because he gives up more points than he generates, is a dumb argument. Kelly Oubre makes this bad team worse.

100% I am just glad we have better players than him like Ish, Thor, Theo and McGowens. Any team would be lucky to have those guys playing mins for them. Man I bet Philly wishes they had Ish Smith. They must have completely missed him being a free agent. Fools.

I'd rather have young, net negative, cheap players that might develop into something better than an established net negative player, but I suppose we have different philosophies. I don't enjoy arguing with people on the internet and am quickly remembering why my fandom lapsed in the first place. You are not very fun to interact with and your pining for Kelly Oubre is irrelevant (the ship has passed) and tired (we get it--you are in love with Kelly Oubre). Come up with a new idea please. The "one that got away" gimmick has run its course.

You are arguing back and forth just as much as me lol. So yeah not going to feel sorry for you.

I don't love Oubre. Just think overall this board loves to find its next scapegoat. He was it for some odd reason, the guy who made 12.6 million last year should have been able to carry us as a 2nd option lol. I am sorry I didn't want to blame a guy paid as the 125th best player in the league last year should have been a winning player on the 4th worst team in the league.

So instead of people eating crow and admitting he could be helpful right now they are throwing 1000 things at the wall on why he actually would have made us worse and how he can help a good team in Philly but on our team he would be bad bad. We are better off playing worse NBA players who likely won't even get real 2nd NBA contracts. It is such a hilarious bad take just so they can continue to hate Oubre.

It is not even Oubre, I would take any player like him right now. As I said, I would take all 81 NBA players averaging 15+ ppg on this team right now. That is how bad we need actual NBA level scoring.

can we get #firemitch trending?
our pathetic trash bench is all his little projects
his lack of action for two straight offseasons has destroyed the depth
he refused to pick a direction, instead of his do-nothing because mediocre is all you can expect in charlotte.

I agree the lack of 3PA and low 3PT% are major issues, but it is pretty remarkable that even with that, and with Melo starting slow and all the other issues with our roster, we are nonetheless posting a top 10 ORTG. It's actually our defense that is holding us back.
