Re: Choseph Smith - the Rich Cho Thread
Unfortunately, things here in the real world don't quite operate the same way they do in 2K land.
You can't just assume we were in the position to sign those players for the exact same deals. Maybe we offered the same money (or more?) and they decided they didn't want to play here? How do we know Marvin wasn't the only vet willing to sign a short deal to knowingly play as a stop-gap while we develop two younger guys to take their job?
How about instead of standing on some strange soap box complaining about things "we coulda done", we just judge things based on the merit of what actually occurred?
I don't personally care if luck played into the draft or the Lance signing. The only thing that matters is that they happened. I'm not going to backhand compliment Cho because it "could've not happened", because it fits my superiority complex narrative like some of you have said in as many words.
The facts of the matter are that we drafted two guys who were pretty universally rated higher than where we got them. One projects to be a highly skilled big man who can step into our future opening at PF/C and the other addresses our dire need for shooting off the bench. By all accounts, we had a great draft.
We followed that up by signing one of the best shooting backup PGs in the league on a short, cheap deal. He can space the floor and play off the ball when/if he sees floor time with Lance. We also brought in a great veteran leader on a short, manageable deal in Marvin, who already has rapport with Al and ties to the area. Then, of course, we brought in Lance. You know, that guy who many people have said has All-Star potential and signed arguably the biggest bargain deal of the offseason.
Things weren't all peachy though. McBob rejected our offer and instead signed a better deal with Miami. That warrants a ding, but it's mitigated by the fact that we brought in a guy who can replace his secondary ball handling (Lance) and spacing at the 4 (Marvin). We also lost valuable role-players in Tolliver and potentially CDR. Those guys seemed to be roster casualties, so there may not have been space for them... but they'll definitely be missed.
Overall, we nailed the draft and brought in more quality talent in the FA market than we lost while maintaining our future cap flexibility. Therefore, in my eyes at least, we had a pretty damn successful.

Mo Williams signed a 1-year deal with Minnesota for $3.75 million and Jameer Nelson signed a 2-year deal with Dallas worth $3 million annually. I would've much rather preferred to sign one of them over Brian Roberts
As far as the Marvin Williams debacle out of desperation, I don't need to list the long list of players that would've been better fits despite not being able to shoot 3-pointers. I'm not one in the belief that we need a PF that can stretch the floor as much as I believe we need a PF that can help Jefferson defend the paint
Roberts averages more win shares per 48 and more points per 100 possessions than either of those two last season. It is tough to see who is better but like you said both the other guys got paid more annually.
The team sees the need at PF as a shooting spot. If you had gotten you wish it would have been a disaster as it would not fit the needs of the team. Even if you thought the player was better if he wasn't going to be used correctly then what's the point.
Let's just say that I think we'll be harping on needing upgrades at PF and backup PG come trade deadline. I hope Marvin Williams & Brian Roberts fulfill their roles admirably, but based on my pre-evaluation of them before becoming a part of the Hornets, neither will be that productive

I have a feeling no matter who we signed at PF we would be wanting an upgrade. There just were not great two year options out there that fit our system. I think we will be fine at PG.

Re: Choseph Smith - the Rich Cho Thread
Lance was a win. I really like the Roberts signing. I really dislike the Marvin Williams signing, much rather prefer giving McBob more years like the contract the Heat gave him. The draft I think was pretty good but I don't think either guy is ready to contribute much this year. Not finding away to move Hendo or Neal for better bench depth is disappointing.
Overall, I think we took a couple of steps back but a little bit more steps forward for a small but noticeable improvement.

Interesting. I kind of viewed the Lance signing as moving Hendo to the bench, which does give us better depth. I actually really like the prospect of starting MKG and Lance at the 2 and 3 spots and bringing Hendo off the bench.

Is it just me or is this completely out of no where? Kinda odd.

Maybe TMZ is about to leak the Lance Stephenson domestic violence tape.

Lol gah. Im honestly surprised ESPN has brought that up. They brought up James Harrisons ordeal that happened in 08 yesterday.

Re: Choseph Smith - the Rich Cho Thread
There have been initial talks with Kemba on extension and they've just started. Not that Cho would say much about it, of course.

Re: Choseph Smith - the Rich Cho Thread
Interesting that Gary Neal is mentioned already twice in the same breath as the MKGs, Kembas and Codies as the hard workers during the summer.
Neal's lost 20 pounds and is in great shape (yep, the time of the year when everybody has either gained weight and looks incredible or lost weight and looks incredible)

i've heard neal mentioned several times as one of the players who has worked the hardest this off-season. i dont think the neal we saw last year is nearly the best version. i wont get too excited until we see it, but its very possible that neal is a bigger part of the rotation that we thought.

If he did indeed lose 23 pounds than he must have put in a ton of work, and had a hell of a diet.
