This may not be a popular trade proposal with some but I'm going to put it out there because it makes a lot of sense... For those unfamiliar, look closely at the player and his body of work and watch him before forming an opinion.
To preface, I think Brandon Miller will be a fine pro. No question he's an elite shooter. What worries me, like others, is that most of his offense was derived from spotup shooting or 1-2 dribble jumpers and I have concerns about him creating for himself in the NBA. I think he'll face the same struggles that Jabari Smith Jr has experienced who was also a great college shooter. I like Henderson's upside but I'm not a fan of a Scoot/LaMelo pairing. LaMelo is perfectly capable of playing off the ball but that's not where he's at his best and he's not being fully optimized.
With that said, if last year's draft was redone today, Jalen Williams is a top 3 pick on most boards and no worse than 4. He was All Rookie first team and was starting to give Banchero a run for his money for ROY when he hit his stride by the end of the year.
His stats were skewed since his minutes were limited early. By later in the season, he was turning into a wrecking machine;
During the month of March when SGA was out allowing him to be featured on offense, Jalen averaged 20pts/6reb/4.5assist/1.7 steals while shooting 56% from the field, a blistering 46% from three and 87% from the foul line during that 15 game span.
He can defend, has PG caliber handles, creates for himself and others and would plug in beautifully at SG for CLT. At 6'5, 211 with a freakish 7'2 wingspan, he's a defensive menace and matchup problem for other SGs on offense.
Video linked at the bottom for those who didn't catch him man handle the Hornets in March.
He's already shown what his floor is and it's damn good. His ceiling could be perennial all star. He's young - 2001 born, the same as LaMelo, and has 4 years remaining on his rookie scale contract.
Why not inquire with the Thunder about trading the #2 for Jalen and a future first?
Or, if we really want to get crazy and are concerned about Lamelo's propensity for injury or skipping town in FA, keep the #2, draft Henderson as our PG and see if OKC has interest in LaMelo instead in exchange for Jalen and some of their treasure trove of future lotto picks (they own Houston's 2024).
A Scoot/JWilliams/Miles/PJ/Mark lineup would be a defensive nightmare for oppositions and even if Scoot never becomes more than a Westbrook level shooter, you've got capable gunners at the 2,3,4.
We'd additionally have cap space to pursue a max level free agent if we choose or to facilitate an additional trade next offseason with Hayward dropping off the books and no longer needing to earmark that money for Ball.
