Won't be no purpose next year since it's only top 1 protected which basically means ain't protected. But I think I get what you're saying, that they should play hard to ensure us the worst possible pick next year rather than this year.

No, he's saying the exact opposite in that they should play hard this year so they convey the pick to us when the potential is much worse for our gain and then next year they get to draft 2nd or 3rd etc.

That's right. It's a choice between giving us 9, 10 or 11 now or risk losing pick 2, 3 4 or 5 next year. If they determine the changes possible are severely limited (due to Smith and Jennings for example), they should work hard to convey now because it's difficult to improve. It's possible the only direction they will move is down next year.

If the pick is 9 or 10 now why would it improve next year? Is Drummond going to get hurt next season or something?

The Pistons aren't gonna be better than they are this year next year unless they trade Monroe for a wing player that's worthwhile. I would be cool with getting the pick next year.

They could easily be better than they are this year. New coach, Drummond getting better, drafting a McDermott to put at the 3, etc.

You might be right but it depends on who they hire to coach and if the next GM has a eye for talent. I could easily see them getting worst.

i don't think they can get much worse, getting rid of Monroe and getting a good SF and put Smith at PF will win them at least 10 more games because it fixes spacing problems

They don't want to get rid of Monroe tho. That's the conundrum. Depending on how the new GM think I can see them going into next season with Monroe again hoping to dupe somebody into trading for Josh Smith to by the deadline and that will fail.

Its not a question of if they want to get rid of Monroe, its a question of if they want to pay him. Some stupid team will offer him a massive contract. Will Detroit match that knowing that no team will trade for Josh Smith anytime soon and that Drummond eventually has to be extended? Good luck Dumars, or whomever the new Detroit GM will be..

10 and 24 are not too bad imo.

Detroit has lost 3 in a row and are now only one game ahead of both Cleveland and New York.

I won't be surprised at all if we don't get their pick this year. They are playing horrible basketball.

The saddest part is that it is not deliberate :(

I watched a few minutes of that game and it was painful.

I'm actually feeling for them at the moment.

It must be hard watching a franchise icon, dismantle and destroy any chance they had at success :( (in the near future)

The Pistons pick goes up in value simply because it loses protection. GM's don't fear a Blazers' turnaround like fans do. I can't imagine that. Maybe we can grab someone like Klay Thompson. It just might be the best thing to happen to us. It's a tremendous asset. The pack of teams near the Pistons have more ways of improving than the Pistons do. The Pistons need to trade Monroe but he wants to enter free agency and his value is not worth the return.

Portland 42 21
Memphis 36 26

With only 20 games remaining it would take a tremendous swing but the Blazers pick is 5 losses away from being a lottery pick.
