You're thinking of extensions.

Childress and Smith both have no current salary for 2008-9.

Won't happen. The Hawks will match the very next day. As soon as they get the language of the contract to make sure it is not front loaded they will match, Do you think Donald Sterling is really going to front load a contract?

Josh Smith is going to be a Hawk. Why? Because his contract doesn't kick in until 2009-2010. By then, Bibby will be a FA, and the Hawks will just let him walk. A.C. Law will be their starting pg in 2009-2010.

The contract would actually kick in this upcoming season.

No it doesn't. Do you think Chris Paul is going to make the max next season? His extension doesn't kick in until 2009-2010. When a guy is a restricted fa his salary is set in stone for the uncoming year. His new contract doesn't start to the following season. See Boris Diaw, and Barbosa they just lost their BYC status.

You are correct. Hawks fans are shaking right now and wishing they didn't have Bibby's big contract.

Bibby's contract put the Hawks in the playoffs.

No their salaries are their qualifying offers. If they sign their tendors they become unrestricted the following season. Why do you think Shawn Livingston is a UFA? His 5.8 million dollar tendor wasn't pick up for 2008-2009.

Josh Smith was drafted in '04.

Rookies sign 2 year deals with 2 team option years.

'04-'05 and '05-'06 = guaranteed first two years

'06-'07 and '07-'08 = team option years

'08-'09 = restricted free agency

Josh Smith is not being extended, he is signing a NEW contract which kicks in THIS YEAR, '08-09.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Hawks fans are getting worried and being in denial. They want Smith and Childress' new contracts to kick in the 2009-2010 season.

You don't know what the hell you are talking about. The qualifying offer is only his salary if he doesn't get an extension. Since Smith and Childress would be signing an extension their contract would kick in this year. The reason that Paul's extension wouldn't kick in this season is because he's only in his third year and has one more year on his rookie contract before it kicks in.

how the heck do you think smith's contract doesn't kick in immediately? if he was under contract for next yr how in the world can the clippers even sign him? this is idiotic.

Apparently new contracts don't start until Hawks fans want them to.

no. wrong. not even close. their salary would be the QO next year if they turn down their extensions and accept the one year tender. if they agree to the new contract, the new salary replaces the QO for next season. you obviously are not very well versed in these kinds of things. check out this site for a bit more info on how these kinds of things work:

Wow Clippers being the Clippers. Hopefully for them, they get a new owner and they keep there talent. Josh Smith is the perfect player to build around.

if he can get a jump shot or post up game.

i hope he stays in atl next year. with an improving al horford, at least a 16/8 smith and if joe plays like he did after the allstar game then we should get 6th seed in east.

i hope atl and philly meet in playoffs. :D

On the brightside we get to see if Chris Kaman is the real deal now. He was very impressive in the limited action I got to see of him, but at least I have still have some question marks about how...

It's also going to be interesting to see what happens with Baron Davis now, do the Clippers still sign him? Does he still want to go to the Clippers (most likely yes^)?

There aren't any other teams that really have the big bucks to give to Davis that the Clippers do so I'm pretty confident Baron still wants to be a Clipper for financial reasons...

Post of the year right here.
1) I could go on about how ridiculous your "contract won't kick in" statement is, but tons of people have already done that for me
2) I assume you mean Acie Law, not A.C. Law?
3) Acie Law is cr*p, and has essentially no PG skills - he will never be the starting PG of any team, not even the lowly Hawks
