You're thinking of extensions.
Childress and Smith both have no current salary for 2008-9.

Won't happen. The Hawks will match the very next day. As soon as they get the language of the contract to make sure it is not front loaded they will match, Do you think Donald Sterling is really going to front load a contract?
Josh Smith is going to be a Hawk. Why? Because his contract doesn't kick in until 2009-2010. By then, Bibby will be a FA, and the Hawks will just let him walk. A.C. Law will be their starting pg in 2009-2010.
The contract would actually kick in this upcoming season.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

Rookies sign 2 year deals with 2 team option years.
'04-'05 and '05-'06 = guaranteed first two years
'06-'07 and '07-'08 = team option years
'08-'09 = restricted free agency
Josh Smith is not being extended, he is signing a NEW contract which kicks in THIS YEAR, '08-09.

pretty much
how the heck do you think smith's contract doesn't kick in immediately? if he was under contract for next yr how in the world can the clippers even sign him? this is idiotic.

No their salaries are their qualifying offers. If they sign their tendors they become unrestricted the following season. Why do you think Shawn Livingston is a UFA? His 5.8 million dollar tendor wasn't pick up for 2008-2009.
