I disagree with this, but whichever way we look at it, its going to be a bit of a grey area.
I think playing for a team like New York allowed Porzingis to have a lot more opportunities to shine. For one, Porzingis played in just about 6 more minutes per game than Turner and was featured a bit more in the offense.
Playing for a team like NY had nothing to do with the playing time difference. Being way better than Turner did. Porzingis by all measures was very impactful on the floor. His on/off was a +5.2. His on court net +/- per 100 was -0.3. Turner's on/off was a -6.0 and his on court net +/- was a -2.0. The reason Turner didn't play more was that the team was significantly better when he wasn't playing.
This is both good and bad because Porzingis only managed to shoot 42% to Turners 50%. Obviously you've got to factor in how much teammates can spread the floor and the fact that Porzingis took a lot more threes(though Turner took plenty of jump shots right inside the line), but as I said its all just a but of a grey area.
It really isn't. Porzingis had a 52 TS% and Turner a 53 TS%. They were about equally as efficient as each other when it came to scoring but one spaced the floor more and had way more volume.
I also think playing in NY helped Porzingis in terms of publicity. If Turner and Porzingis were to post identical stat lines, you'll see a 30 minute segment on how good Porzingis is from SC and a highlight or two from Turner. Not that one game matters, but in their only head-to-head matchup of the season, though it was close, I feel Turner got the better of Porzingis in the game. Only one game of course, but its the only head-to-head matchup we have to go on between the two. The other thing with Turner is that he plays big in big moments, you can find post from numerous Raptors fans talking about how big of a factor he was in the playoffs last year. He was our second best player behind PG as a rookie.
Next to Joe Young Myles had the lowest on/off on the Pacers by a distance. Statistically you guys did way better without him on the floor. Now this is to be expected from a rookie and he was still very impressive but that whole block of text is hogwash (outside of him outplaying Porzingis when he had one of his best games of the year vs NY).
I'm not arguing that Turner had a better rookie season than Porzingis, I think valid cases could be made either way considering their circumstances are so different. But I don't think you can say Porzingis was "way better" either. Either way, these two players could reignite the Knicks vs Hicks rivalry and that would be fantastic.
By all +/- based stats Porzingis was top 60 in the league and 2nd amount rookies (to Jokic). Myles was good but nowhere near that. It's cool to by hype about your rookie but trying to apply logic to it when statistically Myles is left in the dust and by eye test many think Porzingis kills him (there's a reason he's the Unicorn and not Myles even though Myles is big and can shoot)? Not really getting anywhere that way.
I think you guys got yourselves a nice player. Before the draft I had him in my top 5 when it came to upside. Didnt think he'd live up to it but he has so far. I just can't wait until we have 4 20/10 bigs from that draft all making noise.
