Forte IV wrote:theforumblue wrote:most LA sports fans like complaining and griping about the lakers more than they like the clippers. LA sport radio will spend time badmouthing the lakers rather than talking good about the clippers. why do you think that is? when clippers come up it's often in context of lakers. decades and generations of fandom don't turn just like that.
yeah lakers got bandwagoners and they might even outnumber some actual nba team's entire fanbase, but there are dedicated fans in LA/OC area that wouldn't think of switching teams and they absolutely outnumber all of clipper fans, hardcore and bandwagon, by a margin that won't be overcome even with another decade of clipper winning seasons.
win a championship and we can start to talk about what kind of inroads clippers are making in fanbase size. that's about it. maybe some of you guys are young and don't truly realize what "Clippers" brand used to represent for decades in LA/OC area not too long ago. Yeah it's great ownership changed hands and all that. but Clippers organization wasn't just laughed at, they were looked down upon and in some ways for good reason. "Losers" personified. Sterling may not be around anymore but his legacy hasn't been completely erased. In any other town the winning seasons of recent years and certainly winning seasons to come in the future may be good enough. Unfortunately the other team in town has too many rings. winning seasons are not enough.
i personally don't like ballmer at all and do not want to see him succeed, but lakers FO do suck hard and ballmer did manage to put a better FO together. i'm curious what the LA basketball landscape will be like in 10 years.
I agree with a lot of what you said, but I'm curious why you don't like Ballmer?

And to use tv ratings as a measurement for "fan support" is laughable. Especially when there are articles and stats out there that show Lakers viewership was also not that great during that time. Cable tv made watching teams hard.
The Clippers were hot for a season or two when they had "lob city" with CP3, Blake, and DeAndre.
But that was a bubble. It popped and no one cared anymore.
It's not like LA became a Clipper town or they ever had more fans than the Lakers.
Well, thats kind of the point. They were at least fairly popular locally (and nationally) when they were a 2nd round exit. They're now favored to win the championship. LA may not be a Clippers town today or tomorrow, but the support will obviously grown once they win at a high level.
And FWIW -- I do recall a handful of start-studded crowds at LAC games during the lob city era.

The only time Lakers were ever mentioned was when people starting spouting "Oh the Lakers have 16 championships though". "Talk to me when the Clippers have 16 championships". That's it. If making back handed comments towards the Clippers about the Lakers history means still being the talk of the town then sure I guess. But the truth, and believe me I'm right, is that the Clippers were very much the talk of the town. It's just people felt the need to mention the Lakers with the Clippers.
Talk is talk, regardless if it is negative or positive, and Los Angeles was talking about the Clippers. Saying Los Angeles didn't care is beyond stupid. They still talked about them. They were still jealous of them. They were still wondering why the Clippers were good and the Lakers were bad.
Where was all this so called clippers talk taking place? Even in bad times the lakers dominate sports radio and casual fan talk. If I'm not mistaken the lakers still had more national televised games when they were bad, so again I ask where was all this clippers talk taking place?
I don't think you read what I said. And I'll leave it at that.

No one supported the clippers during that time besides their small loyal fanbase. The local tv ratings showed that. The

The only thing factual is coach, and that great coach hasn't even taken them to a conference final over how many years?
Doc Rivers is so goddamn overrated

This is truth. Go to LA and try to find Clippers coverage, merchandise or fans. There is a bigger competition between USC and UCLA than there is LAC and LALsocal74 wrote:Forte IV wrote:socal74 wrote:No one supported the clippers during that time besides their small loyal fanbase. Sellout arenas? Are you comparing selling out an arena vs having majority of support from a region(socal). I never said you never sold out any of your games. The lakers tv ratings were down by alot during the lob city era but it still doubled the clippers viewership. That's how bad you guys have it. No one gives a **** about your team except for the small fanbase that you have. Yes you can sell out your own arena but no one in LA gives a **** you guys.
I also love all these non LA residents chiming in like you guys know what's happening ing in socal.
The Lakers would have to move. Even in that scenario the moment the Lakers were remotely good they would take over TV again. I don't think people understand how much revenue LAL brings in on its local TV deals and merchandising. That was Buss's only business and he didn't have a conglomerate behind him and the Lakers are at the top of the NBA in value thanks to intrinsic fan support.lakerz12 wrote:ChiCitySPORTS#1 wrote:lakerz12 wrote:

Yeah I'm not sure if and what we even disagree on or what point is being argued.
But, of course when you're in one of the largest cities/counties in the world you're going to get some attention if you have any success as a pro team.
And the Lakers sucked at the time so that helped.
If both the Lakers and Clippers are good, no one is going to move over to being a Clipper fan.
If you think that the Clippers are going to win titles and become the #1 team fanwise and impact wise in Los Angeles, I would have to strongly disagree.
They would have to win like 5 titles over the next 10-15 years to see any significant change in my opinion. The Laker roots run deep. And it's not looking like the Lakers will have a bad team whatsoever over the next several years.

No wishing here bud, I really dgaf about what it’s like in LA. But it’s stupid to say that some Lakers fans wouldnt support the Clippers in the Finals if the Lakers were out early. The clippers never had any real success so it’s short sighted to completely dismiss it.

I love how all these non LA residents sit here and talk like they know how much LA loves the Lakers. It's funny how the **** ass east coast can be die hard but for some reason LA cant. Southern Cali in general loves the Lakers and Dodgers. Not just LA. Ain't nothing changing that in my lifetime
