The longer they put off a trade the longer to crawl out of it.
Whole leagues watching and remembering.
It’s a catch-22. They want Simmons for low ball price
But the overall league GM/owners really do not want Simmons and klutch to win this. You don’t want players forcing the issue demanding to be traded with 4 years left.
Might as well make contracts like nfl where only 1-2 years are guarantee if nba players want to move around.
Sure, Simmons is not good enough for anyone to break ranks if a compact exists.
On the other hand Simmons clearly can’t have any part in the Sixers’ long term plans now as a continuing player and Morey is playing games as well. Maybe he has a brilliant strategy, but I doubt leaving a large amount of cap space tied up in Simmons for 4 years is such a strategy.
I don't think Morey actually expects to hold onto Simmons for 4 years, he's holding out for some "difference maker" to get upset or some team to decide to turn the page, which historically happens much more frequently than every 4 years. Lillard is normally brought up just because he's the most straightforward example but it could be anyone. Harden was never talked about as on the trade-block up until about a year ago. So they're gonna wait for that to happen or until someone offers some great pick/asset package that can be used to flip for when that happens.
I don't know if they're actually willing to wait 4 years for something like that to happen, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were willing to wait until at least next offseason, at which point maybe they sell lower on Ben but also do some other move with picks and players to get a guy.
