Al didn't play that series. He was out with the pec injury. We had Antic starting but your point still stands

Go back and check his stats, do it now, his touch around the rim was pathetic, the worst among all NBA centers hands dow, but no one ever talked about it because its such a gimmie skill in the NBA, and because he had one matchup, one guy he always played very well against and thats what people remembered - Chris Bosh.

This guy Roy Hibbert would be atrocious for 6 months, but playoff time he would match up against the Heat and Chris Bosh at center and dominate, Bosh just couldnt box out him, couldnt do it, Roy was his kryptonite, and fans would always tune on for the playoffs, see Roy Hibbert dominate offensive glass in Eastern conference finals, and they proclaimed him a star. He was never a star, he was a nishe one way player and thats it.

Ok ok, I'll do it now.

While I don't think this explains Hibbert's game completely, it is illustrative:
It's time for 5 refs.

Yup. I was at that game, and that was actually one of the first images that came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread.

The refs stopped helping him with BS verticality rules. Cause he often didn’t even go vertical. Had his arms all over people as they jumped up.

Popping-in to say that this is the first thing I think of when people mention Hibbert.

The second thing I think of is him on Parks & Rec.

The third thing I think of is him saying “verticality” on that East Feast episode of Game of Zones.

Your right. I completely forgot. Man, with Horford, the Pacers probably wouldn't have made it.

His skill set was so limited, it was basically post defense and rim protection, that the pace and space era even diminished those skills considerably.

Still, he never should have been an allstar.

Roy’s mobility was extremely questionable, his game was never gonna age well past his athletic peak. That combined with pace and space and questionable mental toughness spelled his doom. Coming out of the draft he was viewed as a low ceiling player and probably career backup. The fact that he maxed himself into the impact player that he was in his prime is kind of impressive. He didn’t have great tools outside of his size.

Was Horford shooting 3s at that time? That 5 out gimmick lineup was the reason they gave us so much trouble, I think the opposite. Pacers take that series much more easily if they play it conventional. Remember this was right before pace and space became the norm. That lineup totally blew up our strategy.

With so many big men becoming the best players in the league could he make a comeback today? (Giannis, Jokic, Embiid, KAT)

Would he be (significantly) worse than DeAndre Jordan in Philly?

Being better than Philly DeAndre is not exactly a high benchmark. Prime Hibbert would be better for sure, but is being better than one of the worst centers in the league really that meaningful?

Regarding the first question, these bigs play nothing like Hibbert did so I don't think the fact that centers are top players in the current NBA changes anything. The question is, are there any top centers with Hibbert's skillset that are stars (or even above-average starters) nowadays?

As others have said it's a lot of things. Mediocre rebounder, bad offense(below average finisher, athlete, jumper), also being just a good rim defender. Couldn't guard on the perimeter so was quickly fazed out.

I think in today's game he would need to try to be a poor man's Gobert.

He would need to play in the perfect system to be successful probably. Phoenix, alongside Chris Paul, comes to mind.

GSW needs a big with Wiseman out. I could see him being (close to) serviceable for them.
