Set an example.
I agree with you. They should just let him rot on the bench. Sometimes you gotta draw a line in the sand tanking value be damned
That said it won't happen

It won't happen because it sends a message to any star that is even thinking about going to HOU. They are watching this situation and if HOU doesn't a get a deal done and continues to waste Harden's career, no one will commit to them in the future.
It's not worth it. They had a good 7 year run with Harden. It's time to move on
That is one way of looking at it. Another would be that other franchises start taking a hard line against whiney "superstars" changing how things are done.
As a fan, I am sick and tired of players demanding trades, and conduct detrimental to the team(s). I can't think of a worse punishment for these players then to let them sit. Sit thru their prime years. No amount of money can buy you time.
I absolutely understand your point of view and Houston may suffer initially because of it, but you can believe that their are other owners that are watching this very closely as they are also tired of running a business with very little control over the product, and these massive contracts being handed out to high end players making it very difficult to move them.
In the end, a person who owns a business has the right to conduct business how they see fit.
