Actually pretty crazy how many quality coaches currently are available. You have 3 coaches that made it at least to the finals within the last 5 years. Monty would also be fun from the perspective that he was a rookie for the Knicks when I really got into Basketball and was still collecting cards.
No one on that list is any sort of upgrade over Thibs. They can't hire a retread. It has to be someone new or a truly great coach, and there isn't one out there, unless JVG wants the gig. Thibs has been basically been a clone of his, but I'd be willing to bet Van Gundy would look a lot different now than he did in his last HC gig. In the end it's likely going to be Bryant.
I don't think JVG works anymore in today's league, he hasn't been a headcoach for almost 20 years. Also it's a bit wild to say that none of them would be an upgrade over Thibs when 2 of them recently won a title. Taylor Jenkins was fired when his team was 44-29. To expect that some completely new head coach comes in and does a better job than any of those 4 I mentioned is extremely unlikely.
Who qualifies then in your eyes as a truly great head coach, if none of these 4 do? The other head coaches that won a title in the last 10 seasons are Mazzulla, Kerr, Vogel, Nurse & Lue. All of them are under contract besides Vogel and besides Kerr I wouldn't see any of them as a better candidate as Budenholzer or Malone.
JVG was very active and engage as an assistant coach for the Clippers. Also played a major part of the Boston staff as a consultant when they won it all. Was an analyst for ESPN during games for like 4-6 years or so. Having said that, I don't think he should get that stressful gig in NY.
I also don't understand some fans wanting a rookie coach because they think re-threads would not be an upgrade.
Vogel was a rethread and won with the Lakers. Bud was a re-thread and won in Milwaukee.
Both Brown and Malone were re-threads and did well for their former teams.
Yes, OKC coach and Finch look good but other rookies didn't exactly do well like that Toronto, Washington coaches.
