Should be the direction the league should go. By 2080, more than half the league will be international players anyway so start this now.

Vancouver and/or Vegas will get those teams within a few seasons.

Shouldn't be a problem funding for the NBA. Vegas is basically the main attraction for NBA stars.

Presumably an NBA team would play in the same arena as the Golden Knights (much as a Seattle expansion team would share the Kraken arena) so they really shouldn't need any public money. They may try and ask for it anyways.

Hasn't the general idea been that an NBA team will get it's own arena?

Correct. Here's the project- https://www.ktnv.com/news/developer-pitches-66-acre-10b-sports-campus-in-las-vegas-with-aim-to-attract-nba-franchise

Developer is the same group that renovated the arena in Seattle for the Kraken NHL team.

time for me to link my old idea again (which is linked to an older idea): https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1857894&hilit=sister+cities

however, i must say that i'm less in favor of this idea now than i was in the past. because of geo-political and demographic trends, we may be heading in a more "regional" direction for the next few decades rather than the "global" direction of the past century.

I think we'll see Seattle or Vegas added to the West and a second team added to the East. I voted Montreal but Louisville or St Louis (again) could be possible. Mexico is also possible. Longer term I can see Europe and Asia but I'd think they'd add a whole division if not a conference in those places. Adding one or two teams that far away isn't practical.

as a Pacer fan, I'm in no hurry for expansion as I'd want to be able to protect more players than I think will be allowed.

not a big fan of the sister cities concept. generally speaking no one wants to be in a polygamous relationship with their sports team.

i think the one city where something like this could actually work is in Toronto. embrace the Canada's team idea and play something like 4 regular season games per year in Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa & Montreal since those cities will probably never have their own teams.

right. that would be the idea. no existing team would share. but if a team was announced as a shared team and the alternative was no team (for instance, some smaller market US city) then it might. but again, this idea is a bit outdated with the way the world is moving.

So, no new update. Expansion is still in the works. But Silver is trying to act coy about it, as expected.

It’s a cool city, and I would love to see Vancouver get the 2nd expansion team (Seattle being first expansion team), but introducing 2 teams in such close reguonal proximity probably limits the non-metropolitan/regional supporter growth in that area.

A Sonics team returning would probably bring some interest from new/returning fans in Vancouver and up around the BC province, even without a Vancouver team returning.

I imagine Portland would likely strongly object to having 2 more teams competing for the broader Northwest market that they currently have the monopoly on, too.

It makes more sense to pick up another market from elsewhere in the US, like Vegas or KC.

Doesn't make sense geographically to expand in Seattle and Vancouver as they are so close to each other. They would need to redo all the divisions and move two teams to the east which leads to other problems like distance and travel.

They’re gonna have to move 2 teams to the east either way minny & New Orleans are both in the wrong spot this begin with both should be in the east check the map also travel wise it’s perfect aswell

One team moves east to make it 16/16.

Inserting 2 west teams into current structure makes it 17/15, so it only needs one movement to be balanced, I assume Minnesota.

The 5 closest teams to the Target Centre in Minnesota are the Central Division in the East… all 5 (plus Toronto!) are closer than the closest divisional opponent, OKC

Silver has said expansion will be on the table after the new TV deals are finalized. I wouldn't call that coy.

I certainly hope so. But I don't trust the NBA.
