Based on what? Shaq never made a 60 win team worse.

Ask Gus Johnson, the only man to ever get a dislocated shoulder getting his shot blocked. Will could bench more in his golden years than shaq could in his prime. He'd of pushed shaq around like a rag doll.

Yes, it's well know that WIlt was incredibly strong, but no one is pushing around Shaq like a ragdoll.
Why so serious?

Probably won't be around in 5 years to come back and revive this thread, so I'll preemptively bump;

The question was most potential, not best athlete.

I find more times than not it's just effort, heart or injury that prevents guys from reaching their potential

Like for me JR Smith with Kobe's mentality would have been an All-star for sure.

who do you got?

I’m not sure lack of desire or competitiveness counts. Those characteristics are as much about potential as vert.

For me I would put:

1) Bill Walton
2) Greg Oden
3) Len Bias
4) Ricky Barry

Darko was just over hyped, had plenty of opportunity to play to his potential, and he probably did.

Have you heard his view on his career? The guy was dealing with all kinds of ****...he never came remotely close to his potential. he down right didn't want to be in the nba and just stayed for the money.

injuries are kinda one of those weird things where maybe they were just always going to happen. It's tough there.

No he didn't. Carter couldn't move side to side at even top 75% nba level. He wasn't nearly the athlete fans think he was.

Oden and Wagner mentions make me sad :'(

Sean Mays a good mention. He looked like he was gonna become a beast early on

Mays couldn't keep that weight under control. He was effortless scoring in the low post man.

On the topic of the question, we're left with athletics vs IQ. There are some insane athletes who are just well stupid. Those guys would never get there. Others injuries hurt them. But then there are those who just didn't give a crap and I think they're the story.

Keith Van Horn comes to mind...honestly I think he just wanted a family and didn't care about basketball. I'm sure there are others but it's more the to me a question of smart players who didnt' get hurt who didn't live up to it because....well they didn't care.

Andrew Wiggins potential was never that high. The dude has incredibly low basketball IQ and awareness, like maybe all time low. BBIQ is to some extent developed but a lot of that is talent which he never had.

Larry Johnson deserves an honorable mention. He just had problems with back injuries.
