I guess it would depend on the percentages. Like if it results in a layup/dunk 80% of the time, where a wide open 3 would result in a basket 50% of the time, it seems that going for the layup/dunk is better (10 possessions would net you 16 points on the layup/dunk while it would net you 15 points on the 3).
Intuitively it makes more sense to go for the layup, which is why shooting 3s on fast breaks drives me nuts, but perhaps there is data out there that proves it's the smarter play to attempt a 3. Bump that percentage up to 55% and it is.
