There was an era where Stephon Marbury or Steve Francis would dribble the ball for 20 seconds and then chuck a contested 18 footer.

Hey, show some respect. That’s real basketball.

I'm just curious. On a fast break where you have at least a man advantage, isn't going for the layup the smart play?

I guess it would depend on the percentages. Like if it results in a layup/dunk 80% of the time, where a wide open 3 would result in a basket 50% of the time, it seems that going for the layup/dunk is better (10 possessions would net you 16 points on the layup/dunk while it would net you 15 points on the 3).

Intuitively it makes more sense to go for the layup, which is why shooting 3s on fast breaks drives me nuts, but perhaps there is data out there that proves it's the smarter play to attempt a 3. Bump that percentage up to 55% and it is.

If the lane is congested and you try to force your way in then you’ll get called for an offensive foul. That’s why you need someone at the 3 point line to kick the ball out to.
