Just a quick reminder that basketball doesn't have to look the same way it looks now

Yep, people act as if thw rules and reffing of basketball has been consistent enough we can call it a straight line optimizing/development

In practice is more like the actual definition of evolution, the environment (aka the nba rules and reffing) change and players adapt to it as it happens

The humble squirel is not any "better" than the mighty t-rex for outlasting it, it just adapted better to survive in the new rules of the planet

Wilt wasn't always all finesse, to say the least.

Holy
Holy crap, your telling me that was an offensive foul? It wasn't offensive foul music.

I knew Shaq could not use his 2001 moves in the 1960s because the would pick up 6 offensive fouls in 5 minutes but I could not see a foul in that video. Rules were strictly enforced. Maybe if the video was better I might see something but it must have been very subtle because replaying the video 4 times did not help me see what they called a foul.

We have more such examples on video. Would you like to see them?

Sure. I think 1960s reffereeing is interesting. The offensive and defensive fouls. The palming and Traveling.

Maybe Wilt hooked a little with his off arm. I could not see what his off arm was doing. Scratch that, I could see his off arm and it was not hooking. And he isn't even backing in. It is a phantom call to my eyes.

The defender looks a little pushed by the way he stumbles back but that might just be the defender jumping back to avoid a defensive foul call. I don't see a push.

Very rare highlight video from the legendary 1962 season. One of the few instances on the tape when Wilt team actually won the game. Russell showed some nice scoring moves here as well

Enjoy!

Not sure what's happening scientifically, but I really love the wispy, lingering afterimage of the lights you can see in the behind the basket angles. Gives the whole thing an even more otherworldly and dynamic feel

Just enjoy some highlights of the new, rare 1973 playoff game. Watch Van Lier highlights, he was outstanding on that night!

Bulls and Lakers had some nice games in the early 70s. Bulls didn't have a center though to compete with Wilt and/or Kareem.

More 70s Bulls:

"Coach, why don't you just relax? We're not good enough to beat the Lakers. We've had a great year, why don't you just relax and cool down?"

Does anyone know if there are any full Quarters/Halves/Games of Peak or near-Peak Wilt?

I know we have a fantastic 4th Quarter from Game 7 of the 1969 Finals
...and there's the 2nd half of Game 4 of the 1967 Eastern Conference Finals
... but I'd love to see if anyone has any other games from 1960s Wilt! :D

Not a lot of broadcasted 1960s Wilt games exist online right now. Are you interested in some silent tapes as well? If so, I have quite a lot and I can post them here.

I finally collected enough footage to publish highlights from this outstanding performance from legendary 1970 Finals series. Wilt crushed Reed-less Knicks in potential elimination game 6.

45 points on 20/27 FG

Enjoy!
