Josh Smith is Finally Atlanta's starting SF

Post#1 » by Ruhiel » Tue Jul 3, 2012 12:30 am

Finally got rid of Marvin who was holding him back and now without JJ the size of guards the Hawks will mean the Hawks need to load up size on the frontcourt to.

The only small forward on the roster. Possibly the Hawks saw a thread of mine :D

Josh vs Lebron
Josh vs Iguodala
Josh vs Durant
Josh vs Anthony
Josh vs Carmelo
Josh vs Pierce.

Josh said he wanted more marketing, now he's on the marquee. hopefully the Hawks dont go with a 3 guard lineup because they have like 3-4 SGs.

8-) Discuss.

perhaps, DTown. Perhaps.

I DO see LD starting Teague and Devin Harris at Guard and one of the SGs (Morrow?) at SF and making us a run n' gun team playing to the strength of our roster while awaiting Ferry to make a more definitive for a real SF or Center.

It would make sense.

Ebanks or Dwight/CP3 next year?

At most Damien Wilkins on a 1 year deal or something to not hinder 2013.

I like what Ferry has done so far

The problem with Josh has not been SF or PF, he's between two, and sometimes it's better to put him at PF, sometimes at SF.
The real problem has been his choices... and what he was asked to do, because if I agree that he's fantastic near the rim, I disagree with asking him to not shot a 3. It was simply stupid because to not shot a 3, Josh has simply replaced it with long 2s, and since he has almost the same % on long 2s than on 3s, it's a big error.
Launching 30% long 2s is stupid, and opponent will let you do it all night long, but 30% 3s, even if it's not a very good % for a wing player, is not that bad if this player also play PF, and 30% on 3s gives the same production than 45% on 2s, exactly long 2s (we are not talking about his near the rim %).

Since he has more chances to be at 30% on 3s than 45% on long 2s, I hope Drew can tell him to attack the rim only, or make him work again on his 3s, and tell him to attack the rim or shot a 3 if the game calls it, but never try any long 2.

I will go further :
in 10-11 Josh shot 3s at 0.331%, making 51-154, and strangely, he puts his best year at FT% (0.725)
the second bast year at 3s was 05-06 at 0.309% and it was... his second bast year at FT% (0.719)

Linked or not, Josh was better on the line when he was shooting some 3s

There are more readily available PFs through trades, free agency and even drafting that make it worthwhile to move Smith to SF.

Win wise you rather have Josh + Al playing with an average big man than an average SF.
Rebounding, high % shots are all likely to come from a big man.
Whereas, Like it or not Joe and Marvin played SF and were above average, but all you got was shooting from them. And then the backcourt had Hinrich or Crawford etc. More shooters.

In that SF identifies whether your big or small, shoot jumpers, post up etc...the SF can be the identity of a team. If the SF is the identity of the team, then I rather have Josh there then Devin Ebanks or Deshawn Stevenson. There isn't enough great perimeter players that can make Smith at PF work. You'd need 2 stars at least if you want small ball.

Get your popcorn ready fellas... Small Forwards going Head 2 Head. I will be very disappointed if this is BS and I see Josh vs Bosh in a battle of pick and Pop PFs next season.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
