Simons for Marcus is not a smart move.

We can agree to disagree about who's better, but one has to go.
And the tax seems to be a secondary issue as seen by not trading Simons before the trade became official.
You haven't explained why one has to go. This is a made up choice.
One has to go because both are shooters and the Cs are lacking a big man.
One shooter and one big man is more balanced than 2 shooters and no big man.

Sam averaged 29 minutes in his 19 starts last season and he was great, shooting .447 from 3 with a .677 TS%.
Yeah, his DRTG ticked up to 120, but his ORTG was 138

I was also a little disappointed with Sam last year. He seemed to stagnate a bit after having made some pretty impressive strides in recent years. He didn't take a step back, he was pretty much exactly the same player he had been last season, which is still a solid NBA role-player and worthy of the contract he's on now but this may just be his ceiling.
Pritchard in comparison took such a huge leap forward that I think it made Sam's plateauing even more apparent. I had given Hauser the benefit of the doubt because he was dealing with back issues but I think looking at the season as a whole and his role/counting stats it just seems like this is likely exactly who he is going to be going forward. Really high floor but this is the ceiling as well.
I'd like to give him a chance to prove that wrong this year though. Part of what's great about Sam is that he knows his role, but this would be the season to try to expand that if he has it in him. Too many games he was an afterthought unless he was getting a wide open look or a play was drawn up for him. This would be a great opportunity for him to try his hand out at being a true flamethrower akin to a younger Klay Thompson (albeit obviously not on the same level). Try to generate scoring no matter what, fire away at all times, add in some attempts at actually putting the ball on the floor, but leave no game where you haven't at least taken 10 shots. This year it doesn't matter if you go 0-10 or 10-10, it'd be about developing that mentality that he has the green light to be a microwave scorer not just a spot up shooter (assuming he has that in him).
That play style seems more like something that will come naturally to guys like Simos and Baylor, but I would like to see Sam try to take the bull by the horns and shoehorn himself in there before he's relegated to getting back in his 3&D box.
Even if he doesn't break out that box I'd still be happy to keep him long-term because his skillset is so valuable, but I'd be far more open to trading him because at least we would have turned him upside down and given him a good hard shake to see if he has anything else in the tank before shipping him off.

But right now Sam is more of a luxury than a need.
Cs have more than enough shooters, PP, Niang, Simons, and Baylor.
Problem with Sam is he's soft.
He gets pushed around by stronger players and he's not a threat to drive to the basket.
If it's between Niang and Sam, Niang has more tricks.
Niang even gets under your skin and doesn't shy away from physicality.
The 1st rnd series against Orlando really exposed Sam Hauser.

Niang is 5 years older and expiring though. Keep the younger guy who is already locked in on a solid contract and keep developing him with more minutes.
Don't dump him as a "luxury" in a bridge season to keep a guy who is at best marginally better and could easily jump ship next summer. We don't need to balance the roster for next year, we need to keep and develop pieces that are going to be able to contribute thereafter. Hauser is the clear choice between the two.

Sam is a great regular season player.
But look at what Orlando did to Sam in the 1st rnd of the playoffs.
When the game becomes more physical and the intensity is up, Sam struggles because he's just a shooter and nothing more.
Sam is basically a specialist.
