They both offer different things. And having them at training camp allows for a more thorough, accurate evaluation than limiting it to just summer league.
Sure but let’s cut to the chase with it — Balcerowski is a nice player but unlikely to make an impact in the NBA, and he’s apparently got a good career going overseas. Azubuike looks — to me — like he could be a useful change-up option to have on the deep bench. Generally over the last decade+ the Celtics have not gone for this sort of player so it very well may be that their relationship with Azubuike doesn’t extend beyond Summer league — we’ll see.
I feel like Balcerowski might be a better deep bench big for us than Azuibuke.
-Balcerowski has more size (7'1" as opposed to 6'10")
-Balcerowski shows more potential as a passer and as a shooter
-Balcerowski seems to play more mistake-free, fundamentally sound basketball, whereas Azuibuke seems like he makes more mistakes such as moving screens, careless fouls, careless passes, less IQ, less court awareness
I don't think Balcerowski will take a 2-way position because he can make more money overseas. He can get a 4-year deal, exactly like Walsh's, which is the lowest possible NBA contract, and have the least effect on our cap situation. I would much rather have him on a regular roster spot, while he learns, than any of the free agent big men available that would put us over the 2nd apron. In addition to that, team continuity speaks volumes in the NBA. I like the rotation of Porzingis, (at 7'3), starting and having Kornet (at 7'2), and Balcerowski, at (7'1) backing him up. Being that they are similar in size, the rest of the team can get used to a player of that size being in a certain spot on a certain play and know where the ball needs to go. Same thing with Big Al and RW3. Now neither needs to think about filling in the center spot, and can focus on the PF spot, unless we decide to go small ball for a time. During the regular season, that five-man big line up should keep Porzingis, Big Al and RW# healthy and fresh for the playoffs.
