Doc knows what it’s like being a young, black coach, and he knows what it’s like being a coach in Boston and the media scrutiny that comes with it. He also has experience as an NBA player. Doc got his first head coaching gig at 38, so a few years older than Joe is right now. Both were gritty PGs. They have a lot of things in common.
There’s a reason why Doc pulled his name from the Suns coaching gig. I think he’s coming back to Boston. Given his age, I think he’s at the point in his career where he still loves coaching, but is probably fine taking a backseat and not being the main guy anymore.
This team has enough chokers. Doc can stay as far any from this organization as possible. This is a coach who has lost the most NBA playoffs series in NBA history, after having the series lead.
We're not asking him to be the head coach.
One thing I think Mazzulla isn't the greatest at is managing the egos/personalities of players on his team, and sometimes just looks a little unsure of what to do/say in certain situations.
Doc is a very good manager of egos/personalities. That 2008 team had some crazy egos and intense personalities - yet those players all loved/respected Doc, they played their a%%es off for him and won a title.
And Doc has tons of coaching experience so he can give some advice here and there to Joe to help him out in certain situations when it's needed.
If Doc is willing to do it - I'm all for it.
