It has nothing to do with talent and ability.
The new CBA is harsh on teams with multiple max players.
Next season the salary cap will be around 155m.
JT and JB will have a combined salary of 107m.
Two players consuming 70% of your cap space?
What the Cs have is an anomaly because there is really a very small chance 2 players on the same team become eligible for a supermax extension.
Sure. But when Tatum decides to ask out in a few years because he doesn’t want to be stuck in a perpetual rebuild, you won’t have to worry about it. Yes the repeater tax is real, the 2nd apron is real, but if you want to build a contender you’re going to have to go over.
No problem going over the cap.
That's not the issue.
It's going way over that results in losing the ability to assemble a good supporting cast.
The OKC model is the way to go.
1 supermax guy, 1 all-star caliber player, and a very good supporting cast.
Celtics were just lucky because the moves they made to get KP and Jrue were still under the old CBA.
If the new CBA fully kicked in back in 2023, the Cs would not have gotten Jrue and KP at such a low cost.
