Sully gets at a detail that I think many forget / never learn. I'll state it explicity:
Any trade where a team is over the salary cap at the end requires an exception.

This can be the MLE, BAE, a TPE, min salary exception, etc. But the 150% +100k, 100% +5mil, and 125% +100k rules[1] are also "trade exceptions".
And, as Sully says, you can't combine exceptions. So, when making a trade, you have to decide which exception you want to use. If you can construct your trade legally using one of the percentage exceptions, then you generally default to that. If not, then you can try to get it done using one of the other kinds of exceptions, if you have them available.
