Sully gets at a detail that I think many forget / never learn. I'll state it explicity:

Any trade where a team is over the salary cap at the end requires an exception.

cbafaq wrote:...exceptions are the mechanisms that allow teams to sign players or make trades that leave them above the salary cap. Any trade which leaves the team over the salary cap requires an exception -- even if the team is moving downward in salary.

This can be the MLE, BAE, a TPE, min salary exception, etc. But the 150% +100k, 100% +5mil, and 125% +100k rules[1] are also "trade exceptions".

And, as Sully says, you can't combine exceptions. So, when making a trade, you have to decide which exception you want to use. If you can construct your trade legally using one of the percentage exceptions, then you generally default to that. If not, then you can try to get it done using one of the other kinds of exceptions, if you have them available.

Me too....We could use his toughness....maybe some of that tends to rub off on a few of the others?

Would be "a natural" IMO....

Can you combine it in a deal with another player or a draft pick?

For example, a player who is good enough that they are not just being dumped in the trade, can Ainge sweeten the deal with one of his plethora of draft picks? I really, really like Dragic, could you absorb his salary with the TPE but also send an asset such as a draft pick to Phoenix to sweeten the deal and get them on board?

You have to structure things as separate trades like TPE for player, 1st for top 55 protected 2nd...

Dragic is a FA. The time to pursue him is in the offseason.

Garnett and one of Brooklyn's shooters for David Lee makes a lot of sense..

What's our incentive for taking back Garnett? Nets have no 1sts..

Love KG and always will, but there's no chance he's coming back, not after trading Rondo. Guy will go to a contender if he goes anywhere. We're the opposite of that...

Now, if we had kept Rondo, signed newly released Josh Smith, then hell yes bring back KG and let's cobble together an improbable playoff run. But Danny choose door #2...

bro you need to chill on these comments, we know how you feel lol.

He can't be any more than 12 or 13, so I'm actually not bothered too much by his comments. lol.

But to answer the original question, yes, sort of. As I understand it, say Danny is enamored with Joel Embiib. He could use the TPE to acquire Embiib (you don't need to use the whole thing) then technically in a separate deal he could send two first round picks to Phili for nothing.

The league doesn't like deals for 'cash', so it'd be something like 'top 55 protected second rounder' to Boston, two first-rounders to Philly.

I'm actually really worried about this draft- if a team like Detroit or Philly gets Towns/Okafor, they'll have a surplus of potential franchise bigs and someone (probably us) will pay a king's ransom to get a cast-off. Like Okafor goes to Philly, and we trade Smart, our lotto pick, and Olynyk for Embiid.

We can probably have our pick of moneyed guys in Denver- Gallo, McGee, even Lawson- just for the TPE, expirings, Wallace.. Would Denver give up their 1st this year?

Return to Boston Celtics
