Both were viewed as needing multiple years to develop into anything worthwhile in the league. After a few years it panned out for Perk. I'm not saying Melo will pan out or not, but he deserves the same patience. He has definitely improved.
I looked up the Stats for the 2004 Summer League (Jefferson as a rookie and Perkins after one year):
Code: Select all
Jefferson 5 games, 25.0 min, 13.0 pt, 8.4 rb, 2.6 blk
Perkins 5 games, 22.4 min, 6.6 pt, 4.8 rb, 2.2 blk
It's just one game, but Olynyk compares favorably to Jefferson and Melo compares favorably to Perkins, too...in everything except blocked shots. Let's see if it holds up over the next four games. Also, keep in mind that Perkins was something like 3/3 during the regular season his second year in under 10 minutes. I guess, Melo still has a chance to be Perkins, good.
