I'm not saying Melo will pan out or not, but he deserves the same patience. He has definitely improved.

I looked up the Stats for the 2004 Summer League (Jefferson as a rookie and Perkins after one year):

Code: Select all

Jefferson   5 games,   25.0 min,  13.0 pt,   8.4 rb, 2.6 blk
Perkins     5 games,   22.4 min,   6.6 pt,   4.8 rb,   2.2 blk

It's just one game, but Olynyk compares favorably to Jefferson and Melo compares favorably to Perkins, too...in everything except blocked shots. Let's see if it holds up over the next four games. Also, keep in mind that Perkins was something like 3/3 during the regular season his second year in under 10 minutes. I guess, Melo still has a chance to be Perkins, good.

Besides Melo needing to finish around the rim a little better. I thought he played well, he showed he has been working on his jumper and his post up game. Not to mention he looks thinner. I think he makes the roster and will get some minutes this season.

I think you have to factor in ages... Perkins was I believe about 3 years younger then Melo is right now during after his first year. Perkins was 23 in his 5th year of the nba.... Fab Melo just turned 23.

And Jefferson was obviously coming straight out of high school as well so he was very young as well while Olynyk is the equivalent of a 4 year college senior in terms of age.

All this being said, there is a damn good chance that Olynyk is a very good complimentary player on offense. It's his defense that has been questioned much more.

The Celtics are really just collecting assets right now and Sullinger/Olynyk have a chance to be assets by the end of this season especially.

Exactly, Perk did absolutely nothing his first 2 years in the league, which was fine because we knew he was a long term project. Melo is the same way and we all knew this when we picked him. I honestly think people just bash him and lack patience because they didn't like the pick at the time. Everyone here wanted PJ3 and he didn't do **** last year either.

I agree with the comments regarding Olynyk's defense. But he did show signs of improvement throughout the game.
He was being backed down a few times and got beat but he learnt and took a step back to draw the offensive foul on Nicholson I believe.

Progress like this makes me believe he can defend in the nba - he will bulk up, many 4 and 5s do when they enter the league but he has lateral quickness and is intelligent.

Remember he hasnt grown up guarding bigger guys - starting life as a ball player as a guard.

His D reminds me of Sully's last year - raw and a bit rookie-esque at times but he will learn, as Sully did.

Olynyk will never be a plus defender, but I think eventually he can be fine. He definitely needs to get stronger, which he should do in time. But he's smart and actually tries, so hopefully with a strength program he can become passable.

Agree, guys like Al Jefferson and Kevin Love are not great defenders - nothing to suggest he cant be a better defender than them (not saying he will be a better player though).

Also just for the sake of comparison.
Steven Adams first summer league game (in 6 or so minutes less than Olynyk).
2 points (1 of 4), 6 boards, 2 blocks, 2 TOS, 3 fouls.

Dont know how well he defended, anyone watch?

Will be interesting to compare Adams and Olynyks progress (through summer league and the season)

To those who watched the game (I wasn't able to) how did Iverson play? I am interested to see if he could be another one of Danny's sneaky draft finds.

Set great picks, hustled like hell on the offensive glass.

Could be a nice big off the bench with his D.

Set picks, rebounded a little, didn't embarrass himself on either end of the floor, but didn't score. I think Melo had a better game than Iverson today. There were plays where Fab looked way worse and plays where he looked much better, very inconsistent. Iverson, otoh, was consistent, consistently average. Both of them appeared to play hard. I give Melo the win between the two of them by a hair.

I actually though his man defense was pretty good in the sense that he banged and moved his feet well. He just gets burned badly by not being able to challenge shots up top. It seems like he would benefit a lot by playing alongside a weakside shotblocker.

I caught a bit of the DET/Brooklyn game. My impression was that Drummond looked very good, but what a stat line: 12 points, 16 rebounds, 5 steals, 6 blocks, 6 fouls, 7 TOs, all in 25 minutes. No wonder he stuck out.

It's times like this that I wish we had KG to mentor a guy like Olynyk.

On a positive note, if we had KG, the Big KO woulnd''t have much playing time

Wait, Shengelia is playing for Brooklyn's SL team? Wish I knew that. He is still in our deal, correct?
