Too bad Tate doesn't fit the Grant TPE.

Banton, Svi, and Lamar for Tate?

Tate is a 6'4 non-shooter. What would be his role on the Celtics other than bench celebrations?

Play defense and garbage points. They have Hauser to shoot. This is a wildly simplistic view of Tates game. Dude can ball

In the last two seasons (over 1200 minutes) he has shot poorly from the three, at the rim, and in the midrange, on low volume, can't rebound, based on block% doesn't seem to offer meaningful rim deterrence (which would go hand in hand with his tiny stature and wingspan), and has 1:1 AST to turnover ratio. I am struggling to find things he's good at. What does he offer over Brissett and Stevens?

He’s provides the same role, only much better. I’d attribute his stats not being up to par largely due to playing for a trash team with a trash coach in Silas. Changing a role as well as a better supporting cast can do wonders for a player. Derrick White for example was by all metrics a poor shooter before coming to Boston. Now he’s a 40% guy going on two straight seasons.

Yeah I agree. We don’t need any undersized PFs. He’s a decent player and plays D and gets some boards but so is Brissett.

You might double check White’s stats. The year before and the year of the trade he was down a bit but still decent given the quality of the rest of his game. Other than that he has always been a very solid shooter. He was a starter. Tate is a limited role player. I don’t think he brings us anything. If he is an upgrade over Brissett, he’s not worth the salary difference.

Haha this isn't true. 120:62 AST:TO over that span.

At any rate my barely informed take is he is sort of a poor man's Smart.

I do think the conversation of 'have the Celtics played a meaningful role in improving guys shooting (Al, White)' is kind of an unplucked low hanging fruit for some writer out there.

White shot better than 36% one time in his years in San Antonio and had dipped all the way down to 30% before being traded. Of course White is a better player than Tate but the point is sometimes stats can be impacted by a players overall situation.

Tate's best two seasons were on trash teams under Silas.
And we've already seen what changing the role and having a better supporting cast (hilarious to use this term for Tate) is doing for Tate. Under Udoka, as a bit player, on a much improved team, Tate is having his worst season shooting ever.
Lastly, if poor shooters can become 40% three-point shooters by virtue of joining the Celtics, then why are we targeting 6'4 tweener forwards? Get a 6'10 guy who can't shoot and turn him into a 40% shooter.

I think Bey is better than Tate.

Bey's ceiling is also higher.

Tate is a finished product.

Maybe. I just don't know that they will add someone who is a non-shooter. Especially at that price point (with how much Tate makes, it'll add more to the tax bill than someone whose salary is in the $2-$5 mil range.

One thing I do like about Tate is how (while he's not a very good shooter) he would help to diversify the offense with our bench unit.

When our bench unit is in, we are not very diverse offensively (as we saw last night and in other games). Al, Hauser and Pritchard - pretty much the only way they score is on catch and shoot 3's. Kornet can pretty much only score when he's right under the basket and someone passes it to him.

Now we did show some nice things a little bit last night with the dribble penetration and dishes to Kornet.

But Tate would bring a different element. While I haven't seen him much this season, I recall from previous seasons he is pretty good at driving to the basket, creating offense out of nothing. Either in the half court - just taking the ball, making a move, and getting to the paint, or in transition - leading the break, and taking it all the way to the basket. He can also post up closer to the basket and face up in the mid range area and take his man off the bounce.

That along with his passing/playmaking ability is intriguing. If he's the only non-shooter in the game (with Pritchard, Hauser, Tatum and Al, for example) it could work.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Tate is having his best shooting season ever. The stats are right on basketball reference.

3 pt shooting:
20-21 season: 30%
21-22 season: 31%
22-23 season: 28%
23-24 season: 32%

While it looks like he's listed at 6'4" now, I know for a fact that earlier in his career he was listed at 6'5". And he's 230 lbs so pretty similar build to Grant Williams - except tate is quicker, more athletic, better handles, better passing, better defense, better at posting up, driving to the basket but worse shooter..

He's at 31.9% on wide open threes which is the worst since his rookie season. He shoots .357 on corner threes. He is a horrible shooter.
Having a similar build to Grant Williams is not a positive.

Banton, Svi, and Lamar for Tate?

I believe he does fit, cause there's a buffer where you can acquire a guy who makes like $250K more than the TPE.

Actually, "similar build to Grant Williams" is probably all that needs to be said to rule a player out for acquisition.

He doesn't. He makes $47,500 more than the TPE + $250K.
