Play defense and garbage points. They have Hauser to shoot. This is a wildly simplistic view of Tates game. Dude can ball

In the last two seasons (over 1200 minutes) he has shot poorly from the three, at the rim, and in the midrange, on low volume, can't rebound, based on block% doesn't seem to offer meaningful rim deterrence (which would go hand in hand with his tiny stature and wingspan), and has 1:1 AST to turnover ratio. I am struggling to find things he's good at. What does he offer over Brissett and Stevens?

He’s provides the same role, only much better. I’d attribute his stats not being up to par largely due to playing for a trash team with a trash coach in Silas. Changing a role as well as a better supporting cast can do wonders for a player. Derrick White for example was by all metrics a poor shooter before coming to Boston. Now he’s a 40% guy going on two straight seasons.

You might double check White’s stats. The year before and the year of the trade he was down a bit but still decent given the quality of the rest of his game. Other than that he has always been a very solid shooter. He was a starter. Tate is a limited role player. I don’t think he brings us anything. If he is an upgrade over Brissett, he’s not worth the salary difference.

Lastly, if poor shooters can become 40% three-point shooters by virtue of joining the Celtics, then why are we targeting 6'4 tweener forwards? Get a 6'10 guy who can't shoot and turn him into a 40% shooter.

Tate is having his best shooting season ever. The stats are right on basketball reference.
3 pt shooting:
20-21 season: 30%
21-22 season: 31%
22-23 season: 28%
23-24 season: 32%
While it looks like he's listed at 6'4" now, I know for a fact that earlier in his career he was listed at 6'5". And he's 230 lbs so pretty similar build to Grant Williams - except tate is quicker, more athletic, better handles, better passing, better defense, better at posting up, driving to the basket but worse shooter..

Banton, Svi, and Lamar for Tate?

I believe he does fit, cause there's a buffer where you can acquire a guy who makes like $250K more than the TPE.
