I don't know how anyone can watch him get cooked, allowing guys to blow by him to the basket multiple times a game, and still claim he should be part of the DPOY conversation. We truly do have the biggest homers in this fanbase. He's a solid and smart defender but not a great one.
As to his effectiveness this season, he's literally getting wide open threes like everyone else who has played his role but the difference is, his shot has been money THIS season. But it wasn't last season when he was shooting 31% from three. Was that his outlier season? Is this an outlier season? Or is he most likely somewhere in the middle where he's resided his other seasons around 35% which is average? He's a bad shooting slump away from being unplayable in the playoffs btw. Better hope it doesn't happen.
As to why he's not playing in the 4th currently, it's all about Smart and his fragile ego. It is what it is. While White is shooting this well (or Pritchard last season when he was shooting even better than White is now i.e. 41%) he should be starting over Smart and be our crunch-time PG with Smart reverting to his more appropriate 6th man role because it means the people shooting the wide open threes have a better chance of hitting them rather than Smart, which opens up driving lanes for the Jays and our offense in general. But again, Smart's ego is too fragile to accept that.
Your ability to continue to say the stupidest things on this board is quite a feat.
As basketball fans, we don't pick up everything while we watch. Some pick up less than others. There is a bit of kernel of truth where White isn't this hound who locks down his assignments. He's not this versatile defender like Smart and he can get out muscled.
That's not what has made White a good defense player this season. It's his weak side defense and his recovery when he gets beat. That's the reason why White has been a leader in blocks as a guard this season. It's not as if he's this explosive leaper like prime Ibaka or lengthy like Tatum. Nor is it him sagging off his man to cheat. Guy is just smart and times his approach well.
Some people can't see the details beyond the superficial. Maybe it's a lack of experience watching or straight up bias. Either way, real ones can tell that White is positively impacting the defensive end even if they can't articulate why
