Snag hit.........

Post#1 » by Kefa461 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 6:24 pm

"The Celtics’ attempt to sign free agent Marquis Daniels - a deal they have attempted to facilitate with a sign-and-trade arrangement with Indiana - has hit a snag.

The Pacers are reportedly dissatisfied with what the Celtics are offering - with the primary bait said to be guard Tony Allen and possibly Gabe Pruitt.

As a result, according to a source close to negotiations, the Celtics and Indiana are now searching for a third team to make the trade work."

I would prefer not to see Pruitt go for Daniels.

If you look at Pruitt's college stats -

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/player ... rt3=fg_pct

As an 18 year old freshman @ USC, during conference play, he shot 48.9% from long range on about 5 attempts per game. This was college and all, but that is still impressive.

As a 19 year old sophomore his shooting declined slightly as he was called on to play a slight bit of PG.

And a 20 year old he was called on to take over the PG position and his shooting suffered.

Especially since he is purportedly our best practice shooter and appears to have decent mechanics, my bet is he could step in next season and drain the trey if called on to be a SG rather than a PG. Unlike Eddie House, he has the size and athleticism to effectively guard many SGs, and had shown great defensive potential for us last season.

Players who can stroke the trey, defend, and are relatively unselfish are valuable role players. And then you have to take into account that he could possibly still develop into a decent PG. We'd have him at a minimum salary, if easily avoidable I hate to see him go.

So basically Danny Ainge has to find a third team that will give up something for either Tony Allen or Scalabrine so he can turn around and give it to Indy. Good Luck with that one.

Daniels will be signing for the LLE.

Damn I will be a lot happier when Daniels and his shotgun shooting head exploding tattoo is finally a member of the Celtics!

C17P hit the nail on the head here. If DA is not giving up Walker or Giddens and Daniels really is willing to take the LLE, then I think Larry is the one who breaks first here. He could get his team paid $500K to add TA or Scal as a 12th man on the roster. Both teams win that way. Maybe DA throws in a future #2 pick, but that is as far as this thing goes...

It makes sense that Bird doesn`t want TA. He finally got rid of the last troublemaker on the team, so taking Allen back now isn`t an option...

Hopefully they can find a third team. I would really like to see this deal go through...it is time...

Just give Indiana Giddens and Walker for Daniels and Indiana's 2010 Second round pick.

Deal Done.

I'd be happy for us to take Giddens off your hands, but we have no need for Najera at all.

Allen + Giddens + cash (to buyout Allen)

for

Daniels

Would you guys do that?

One way or another, trade or no trade, Tony Allen will not be on our roster.

The problem is that there really just isn't a reason to do a S&T for either team.

Boston would like to move out a contract instead of just adding salary, especially in July. But in the end they are going to end up simply paying Daniels more anyhow. Is Boston really better off paying Daniels 4 mil than paying him 2 and Tony 2.5? It would also be nice to have that package of expiring deals at the deadline to acquire a rent a player or to grab a nice piece on a multi year deal that a team wants to move on.

I am not a huge Giddens fan but that doesn't mean he isn't going to be as useful a player as Daniels.

I think the S&T thing was done for Daniels' benefit. I am sure the Pacers kind of felt a bit for the guy, as he played well for them and they still voided his 7 million dollar paycheck and the C's obviously want to make their new guy happy. But Boston should not give up significant value to get this done and Indiana has little motivation to take on salary to help Boston.

One possibility is OKC, who had interest in TA last year. Perhaps they take on TA with cap space and IND gets a TPE and Boston gets Daniels.

As for Pruitt, I liked him when we got and still have hope for him but he is not an NBA SG he became an NBA prospect based the ability to play pg, without he is probably done.

The benefit of paying Daniels more is that we could sign him to a longer deal.
If it's the LLE, Daniels probably only takes it for a year, maybe with a PO. Then we're in a Posey situation where next year he runs off for big $$s elsewhere. On top of that, we won't even have our LLE next offseason.
So if we think he's going to be valuable, it's in our itnerest to sign him for a longer deal, assuming the money is reasonable.

For Indy, really it's a matter of something is better than nothing. They have to take on salary (an expiring, probably TA), but we have to sweeten the pot with something like Walker or Giddens, or maybe a 2nd ournd pick. We should just give them 2.5m cash to buy out TA if they don't want him.

I don't get this at all. Why are we doing a S&T for Daniels?

Can't we just offer him a deal and be done with it since he is an unrestricted FA?

If they sign Daniels they lose the LLE for two years. If they sign and trade for Daniels they can use the LLE for someone else now.

You know that phrase, "thinking two moves ahead?" That's this.

(plus they clear a roster spot and can give Daniels a longer contract)

^ Could easily be no one in particular right now. Just having that flexibility available is a pretty big asset for a team with a roster built like Boston's.

Thank you for clarifying. I wasn't aware that we'd lose the LLE for two years if we signed Daniels.

I wonder who might we be saving that LLE for? Powe? Stephon?

NO big deal really. Yea it would be nice to still have the LLE and Daniels, but if we are lucky enough to get Daniels for just the LLE, then we as Celtics fans should be more than happy w/that.
Paul Pierce said it best about Caron Butler and the AS 2007 Game:

"Caron Butler should send me flowers for being injured so he could make the All-Star game, because if I was healthy, he wouldn’t be in there.”

Probably depends on the situation. If another team signs BBD and we don't get a 4th big back, we might target Joe Smith/Ben Wallace with the LLE. If not, it might be Marbury or some other pg. Or we could just leave it in case somebody becomes available later this year with a buyout or leave it for next year.
