That's the point: "intend on keeping CP" is IRRELEVANT if he wants to leave once his contract is up. It doesn't matter what the TEAM WANTS at that point, it's what the player wants. And since that player has said he wants to play for a contender, the picture is clear.

You can't just sit on your best trade asset while trying to appease your superstar.

And you can't appease your superstar if the deal doesn't accomplish the goal. The catch is that the goal isn't possible in a year and a half.

If we wanted to keep Collison then we should have just traded CP. If my options are keeping cp and getting ariza or trading collison, then guess what, I trade collison.

I'm a hornet fan before I am a Paul fan. I would have much rather seen the team try to package CP with Emeka and get a package with Granger for the future of the team than to watch Paul walk and become the Cavs watching Lebron take the entire franchise with him.

Even if the hornets weren't the obvious winners, this trade is by no means the boneheaded move people are characterizing it as. We are taking a gamble and it is worth it to see if that gamble will work out.

It is boneheaded for the long-term good of the team. This team has trouble enough attracting free agents and making quality moves. Their main hope is drafting star talent. And they threw that hope away for a short term "fix" that won't end up "fixing" anything.

We are a better team with Ariza playing 35 minutes a game then we are with Collison playing 20 minutes a gmae.

We are not a better team with no Paul, no Collison, and looking to trade away Ariza.

So the hornets get a young starting small forward whos been on a championship winning team in exchange for a bad contract and a backup PG who was a turnover machine and every wants to say its a move in line with MoPete, Posey, Peja, seriously, u ppl r (Please Use More Appropriate Word).

How the hell are the Hornets gonna keep Paul by committing to Collison? If Paul goes then he goes, no sense waiting around to see if the current roster will charm him. They made a move and filled the exact needs of the team: Wing defender, starting small forward, length and atheticism.

Keep hating, whatever.

This was a good argument, so it deserves a well though out rejoinder.

We have to start with the fact that the Hornets have decided to keep Chris Paul. This has been made obvious by Demps' statements and actions. Arguements for whether or not this is a good trade have to start there.

If however you believe we should have traded CP rather than kept him that's a completely different argument. Chris Paul is a top 5 talent in the league. He's a once in a generation point guard. You don't trade a guy like that away unless you absolutely have to. Hi draft picks, or young talent are just bets that you might get what you already have, a true franchise player. It is a bet that rarely ever works. The teams that trades their best player almost always lose. I have no reason to believe that trading CP would have been any different. On a business level, he is our most marketable player and we lose tickets, merchandise and all around viability in New Orleans if we trade him.

What happened in Cleveland this summer really sucked, but they had a real shot the last two years. I would rather the Hornets make every single effort to try and win a chip then take a low chance bet to "Rebuild" with better chances of us of perenially rebuilding than anything else. For every Okc there is a Sota, and a Clippers.

Yes CP might walk away but that is the chance you take. The draft is NOT the only way to get talent, see LA, Boston, Miami, esssentially every championship team in the last 10 years other than the Spurs.

Our chances of keeping CP are much better with Ariza than Collison. It is not set in stone that Paul is leaving. The odds are against us, but things happen. LA got Gasol, Boston got Garnet, that kind of thing does happen. Until then we should try to make the most of our assets and put Paul in a good position to do what he does. I really think this team could be a 3 seed in the West if things go right.

This move is not a home run, but it doesn't have to be. Its a solid single. A good step. We still have assets like tons of expirings and picks, and a player in Pondexter who I believe will play well this year. I also think that Thornton is crazy underrated. If Eric Gordon had played that well 2 years ago he'd be in considered a top 10 sg.

I think you fail to realize that keeping Collison would have damaged our short term future in a way that would also damage our long term future. We might not have cp or collison at the then end of it, but again having Ariza greatly increases the chances of keeping CP.

No one thought Kupchak's first move after the Kobe trade, signing D Fish, was THE step to convince Kobe to stay, but it was a step in the right direction, and so is this.

Return to New Orleans Pelicans
