If Smith can keep up his Pacer pace. Sure. Money being even I think it’s a toss up.

Smith is a better shooter
Smith is a better rebounder
Smith is a better shot-blocker
Smith is a better defender
Smith is younger

Bagley is decent, I don’t hate the guy. But if I get to chose one to be a Detroit Piston PF/C hybrid, I’m choosing Smith.

Jalen Smith is also a better fit with the team's current needs. I'd easily pick Jalen Smith over Marvin Bagley.

More than anything else, Bagley's defense is just horrendous. Bagley can score in a more variety of ways compared to Jalen but this team needs better defense (and ability to stretch the floor) from the front court than scoring versatility.

Which is all probably true. My issue with Smith is largely the fact that he did really well when the Pacers season was over. The suns giving him for nothing, a cheap owner taking on more money to get rid of him.

But honestly, I’m indifferent between the two of them. Considering they most likely will wind up being career backups, I’d rather go with Bagley whose pretty much shown what he is vs the player that’s largely an unknown commodity in Smith.

Yea I looked it up, he played more C the year before they signed Plumlee. He only played half his mins at C this year.

Okay, hear me out; I’m not even sure I like this idea, but it fits the bill and everyone knows NY wants to dump more salary. Check out Obi Toppin’s game log — he actually put up good numbers on good percentages when he got more than 20 minutes (i.e. when he wasn’t buried behind Randle). If we sin-ate Evan Fournier with our cap space, could we get Toppin and the worst of NY’s 4 1st-rounders next year (most likely the DAL pick)? I don’t wanna get too greedy, but they gave us a better first for eating one year of Kemba at half the cost. Two years at $18M per (last year of his contract is a team option) for Fournier could net us a pick plus Toppin, and if Toppin blossoms with opportunity he fills a need and fits our timeline. Plus, Fournier ain’t a bad veteran shooter to add to our bench.

Edited to add — I realize protections on our and the Wizards’ pick complicate things, as the Knicks won’t likely actually have four first rounders.

Not the worst idea, tho I really don’t like the second year on Fournier. Couple this with letting Bagley and Diallo go (Fournier gets minutes at the 3, Obi at the 4) and it’s not that expensive.

I’d probably still pass, but wouldn’t hate it.

Best move is just one year deal Warren or Porter Jr. They both could use a one year deal to prove there worth on a bigger deal. We can overpay them to entice them here. Either guy is perfect for what we need giving us a vet that provides spacing.

Daniel Theis, Danilo Gallinari, Davis Bertans, Jae Crowder (if the Suns make a big move), Dario Saric (not sure on his health), Juancho Hernangómez, Derrick Favors, JaMychal Green, Marquese Chriss and maybe some others.

I kind of like the idea of trading Walker for Favors if they’re just planning on cutting Favors. It’d be more for veteran leadership and the fact that he could actually fill a role, where Walker would be a $9 million 3rd stringer.

Gallinari and Olynyk would be redundant.

We could probably get Hernangómez with a 2nd or they throw us cash for the rights to someone we drafted in 2008 just to get the Jazz under the tax. He’d be a solid placeholder ( as a deep bench guy) for a year and he’s young enough to where maybe he has a fluke good season to get another contract.

Everyone else I googled and looked at their contracts and such, don’t seem worth it. Crowder would accept a buyout just to get on a playoff team.
