Shaq and 3D trying to buy the team?

Post#1 » by davey_wavy » Sun Jun 26, 2022 11:18 pm

I guess Shaq made a statement saying the DeVos family should sell to him and Dennis Scott.. Not a huge story but interesting non the less. Diesel as our owner?? I kind of dig it

If anyone was to buy from the DeVos family, I'd want Shaq and/or Grant Hill.

That said, I'd be surprised if the franchise went up for sale.

I’d be all for Shaq buying the team with Dennis Scott. The profile of the team upgrades significantly with such a move. Our owners are very absentee owners these days, especially since Rich Devos passed. It all went down hill when that one guy drunk dialed Dwight Howard a decade ago. I say some new blood at the very top of the Magic is great medicine.
You look confused...let me fill you in.

With the way the price of real estate has went up the team is probably worth 2 billion right now. The AdventHealth Training Facility will be open soon. Didn't they also build an Entertainment complex next to the arena?

They also have the RDV Sportsplex which they built in the middle of nowhere years ago and now in the middle of corporate buildings on some of the most valuable land in the area.

Then they have the airport hanger.

DeVos family are towards the top in NBA ownership wealth. And you’ll see it’ll slowly pass down (already happening) from Dick and Dan down to Rich’s grandkids who have grown up with their family owning the team. As long as they keep loving it, I doubt they’ll sell. They’d probably scoff at a $3 billion offer. And the tax writeoff benefits are enormous every year.

Also, not sure of Dennis’ wealth situation. Shaq can easily get a buying group together and I’d be on board with it as long as he himself doesn’t get involved in the actual basketball operations. Shaq’s become a hell of a businessman, but you don’t run a team like a business if you’re trying to win. It took Rich DeVos blowing it (combined with a bull CBA at the time) with Shaq to realize that lesson.

Isn’t Rich’s grandkid part of the management team now? Or helping out with talent evaluation?

I don’t think the team is up for sale any time soon. And hopefully the grandkid isnt a Vivek wannabe haha

RDV Sportsplex in Maitland…. Used to hook up with a Solar Bears cheerleader who lived right across the street. Time flies

Didn't they used to own the greatest most expensive NBA arena ever? You know, the Travis Diener Waterhouse Centre or something?

Yeah, seems like the kids/grand kids are still very much interested in running the franchise.

Shaq and his people were just making people know of their intentions. He's probably also getting his name out there for other investors in case the league expands and adds 2 more teams. He'd throw his name into that hat for sure.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

I actually don't mind the Devos family owning the team, well I don't know much about the younger generation now, but it seems like Weltman has been able to call all his shots. And before Rich died, they were willing to pay extra for a winning team.

I guess the one positive about Shaq owning the team, is that I believe he will keep the team in Orlando. That's really my big worry about whether the Devos family ever decide to sell. Well that, and whether the owner will but in basketball decisions which I can totally see Shaq trying to do.

As a fan, it's sort of a worst nightmare for me. Shaq has alluded to this over the years, too. He left for LA, talked a lot of trash about the city (not just the franchise) on the way out of town. He'd be an owner to come in and want to relocate the team somewhere else. Awful idea.

Add to it that he'd probably be unable to be very hands-on given his other obligations. I don't have anything against the guy personally, I just don't think it'd work out for fans or the city.
