If Brunson walks, do you just tank for Wemby, Smith, Lively, Scoot, or the Thompson Twins?

I don't think its possible because of BYC rules. We can only take back 50% of Brunson's outgoing salary. For example if you guys want to sign him to a 22 mil/yr contract, we can only receive back 11 mil back.

And would need real incentive

Agreed. Even if it was possible, Mavs would not do it. NY version of Randle is one of the worst possible fits with Luka.

You have to wonder why New York is so desperate to be mediocre with no hope of improving the franchise.

A 30+ M offer for Brunson is a classic Knicks move... No surprise.

I think its 50% of 22 mil/1st year x 1,25 + 100k = 13,85 mil is what Dallas could get back.
But: New York would need to at least send something back worth 16.5 mil - so it doesnt work.

Mavericks Feel Knicks Have Become 'Inevitable Destination' For Jalen Brunson
JUN 28, 2022 5:19 PM
The New York Knicks have lined themselves up to pursue Jalen Brunson in free agency and there is "a growing resignation" among the Dallas Mavericks that they will lose him, writes Marc Stein of Substack. The concern is that the Knicks have become Brunson's "top choice and his inevitable destination."
Tim Cato of The Athletic reports that Brunson leaving the Mavericks for the Knicks "at this point, [is] seen as a certainty."
The Mavericks twice passed on the opportunity to sign Brunson to a four-year, $55 million extension. Brunson will likely sign for approximately twice that amount in free agency.
Brunson was a second round pick out of Villanova in 2018.

Brunson made his strides in becoming a better player because he was lucky to play with Luka and as it is looking to me that he is leaving. I can hardly blame him the MBT miscalculated same as the old MBT failed with Nash they **** up by letting their heart get too attached and they let their emotions and ego get in the way of doing what was right for the franchise.
The mavericks should have worked out a trade because they could have gotten better assets coming back and they failed to do this and that burned them badly. The Brunson deal was to be about how we trade him and I was looking forward to them doing so to get something better in return but Cubans brain trust had to learn the hard way that money trumps loyalty and always will.
It is nothing personal it is just the way it is guys you have to learn not to be so emotionally attached and to do what is in the best interests of your whole team not just one player.
Cuban needs to take the blame again for this happening, it is his ego that caused it to happen. We took Bullock away from them last year so this should have been anticipated.

Maybe wait with the hottakes til we know how the game plays out? Lots of ppl got burned on that draftday knicks trade.
Nothing says this is the end of it. Actually, i feel like its the beginning. If they only had dumped 1 of them i would have been more worried. This much cap feels like its part of something bigger. Exactly what is impossible to say, something with ayton? Murray? Might very well be some 3-4 team trade lined up.
People need to keep the hottakes on the general board where they belong and chill. For all we know knicks isnt even signing brunson. No camp have said that, its just been media spinning.

It simply is not possible to tank with Luka on board.
Even if we start Luka + four of the ManiAACs we would probably make the play-ins.

Dallas just drafted the replacement for Brunson. Nico didnt give away two picks just to have Hardy play 5 minutes of garbage time. They will develop this guy regardless if Brunson walks or not.

Face it if Cuban is wise he will not pursue Brunson at 100 mil. That is insane the kid cannot play defense well enough to be trusted on that end of the floor his sole worth is on offense and Luka will be the man for most of the game leaving him less time to be that guy he was in the PO's. You have to be realistic here and understand the ramifications of tying up so much money in a player that is playing the same position as your best most highest paid player. That is not a sensible approach to building a balanced team.

The Mavs are not tanking just because they lose Brunson. They will add Dragic and add through trades. They will still be contenders when all is said and done.

Wood Hardy Bingham and THJ returning and a Dragic signing is enough to improve our chances over last years team and we might have won the championship with this team last year.
Wood and Bingham solve the center problem partially and with another veteran signing of a center like Hartenstein I think we are ok at center for a while and we wont be giving up all kinds of offensive rebounds and second chance points to opponents and the rim will be way better protected as well.
Wood will bring in his 20 points to more than replace what Brunson supplied in offense.
Hardy at 6'4" is a better defender than Brunson on day one as a rookie.
Dinwiddie is 6'5" so ditto and I was upset that he did not get Brunson's minutes last year since he was clearly a much better 2 way player.
Plus THJ and his scoring is back as well.
Bullock and DFS can easily split minutes at the 3 and DFS can play a few small ball minutes at PF also.
Kleeber can do PF instead of C
Bertans can contribute minutes and 3 pointers at PF also so the bigs are ok and might improve when we sign Hartenstein if we can do that.
Deep bench talent is nicer now that we got rid of Burke, Brown, Boban and Chriss, Green Frank and Pinson are younger and better defenders that can improve on offense as time goes by. If LeClegue and Gorham look like keepers we get a nice bonus.
Luka Dinwiddie Frank
THJ Hardy Pinson LeCleq
DFS Bullock Green Gorham
Kleeber Powell Bertans
Wood Bingham _______
Obviously center is the area we need to fill in at first then Dragic and Payton might be options.
With additions through trades and signings the cuts to the bench would take off the guards and wings that are camp invitees possibly Pinson could go back on a two way and or Frank or Green could be traded out for some asset.
It Just depends on what kind of moves drop in our lap.
Bottom line you see who gets signed and what kind of players are left without contracts in the end and usually some good players will miss out because they don't get signed before money dries up and everyone only has minimum deals to offer.
I want the center position solidified a bit more because Wood is not known for his defense and I do like what I see from Bingham he is shooting the 3 very well and that is a rare talent among centers.

I don't count to much on rookies, they can't play this season. It's normal.
Hartenstein is close to Orlando.
