I know it's not saying much considering how bad he is on both ends. The one time I saw him play well was the season finale vs Detroit's scrubs and it was on the offensive end.

This is a bit of a misconception, that corner threes don’t require much self-creation. There’s a reason why Isaiah Joe, never seems to get open for them, why I can barely recall Reed even shooting a corner three, why Thybulle, even though he is utterly ignored out there, is still not open in the corner as much as you’d think. Meanwhile Danny Green makes a living there while every player in the league knows he makes a living there. If you just stand in the corner, your offense is stagnant, and its relatively easy to close out to you. There is a skill to relocating there at the right time, timing it with your team offense’s penetration. Watching some Melton film, I think he gets it.
Paul Reed definitely has not gotten it yet, so like most other parts of his game, it remains theoretical. I think it’s nuts at this point to call him a “potential elite defender”- he’s not even a good defender yet. He’s objectively worse than Tobias. And he’s not that young anymore.
What? Reed is still only 23 and has shown that he's already a great defender.
Reeds offensive potential is much better than his defensive IMO.
He's Amare or Toppins like in having a body type that prevents a low enough stance to have the lateral movement to be a great defender on the perimeter... He even gets bullied on drives by guards. Back up guards. Not big enough to body up big post players. Offers little rim protection, with the exception of charge here or there.
He supposedly had one game in like November where he held Giannis to a 30pt game of lower efficiency in a Bucks win and people got excited.

Totally disagree, since your going on eye test, I'll give my eye test, I've seen him hold is own against guards that he switched on, and plays great low post defense

I can literally recall during the last week of the season where Lance Stevenson bullied him driving into the lane twice in the 4th. It was freaking embarrassing as he went right at him.
Lance Stephenson may not be in the NBA this year. Paul Reed may not be in the NBA next year.

He's only 23, cut him some slack. And I've seen Lance do that to everyone, it's literally how he plays. You are exaggerating

No hate on the kid necessarily. Though it will always come off that way. I'm just conflicted as to why fans whole heartedly believe he should be a key rotation player on a hopeful contending team. He's too small to be a center.... His base is too high to get low enough to guard smalls. Has not proven to beat shooter to play forward.
I mean I can see him getting stronger, I can hope that he can shoot better. If that did occur he would likely be one of the better role players in the league.... I have no problem with him continuing to develop in NBA practices and certain specific roles in games. But, Drummond signing to the bulls for next to nothing breaks my heart

keep that noise in one of the threads that speculate about how many future all NBA teams that he'll make after he gets away from Doc Rivers

We're obviously dealing with small sample sizes here (thanks Doc), but pretty much every advanced stat I've seen suggests Paul Reed has been a positive impact player already with the undersized and unrefined game he has now - LA-RAPM, EPM, RPM, BPM - they all support him being a solid player.
What's more is that even his weaknesses seem improvable. He shot pretty respectably in college and even better in the G League. I don't think we're looking at a Thybulle/Simmons situation here and think Reed can end up being serviceable enough as a shooter.
He fouls a lot but he also dominates the possession battle. He'll probably always foul a bit because he goes for it a lot, but it should improve some over time.
His footwork can be weird but can also be effective and I think there's some upside there.
I think he's going to be a very solid rotation player and he just needs more minutes, and he obviously should have gotten many more of them last year that we squandered on known liabilities.

I was very surprised by that, he could barely put together a sentence.phiphan wrote:The RTRS interview with Reed was a little illuminating. Dude’s a couple beers short of a six pack.

My take? He looks legit on both ends as a rotation guy and will probably be our most exciting role player in years, but he's also just that, so we’re going to be really impressed sometimes and really annoyed at others and by mid season this thread will be stacked with people who are upset he makes mistakes and isn’t amazing (‘Melton ain’t it, guys’) while other people will respond with ‘you know David Roddy is a back up in the g league right.’ And then some people will inevitably bring up the one player drafted after 23 who looks pretty good and overstate how much he’d mean to us in the PO, and there will be occasional games where Melton will do something awesome and neutral people will be like ‘idc I just said the vows and I’m officially wed to DeAnthony Melton please don’t cheat on me sir I’m fragile.’ Melton trade is the sneak biggest realgm drama move of the summer imo and I love it for that.
Lacking that backup qb is definitely a concern. I've been on board with trying to add Rondo. Maxey mentor with loads of experience and still capable of finding another gear in big games.Negrodamus wrote:HotelVitale wrote:Been on a random kick this week of watching these Melton ‘all possessions’ clips, gives you a really good idea of how he uses his shots and how he’s effective generally speaking. https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=de%27anthony+melton+all+possessions

He’ll probably be good here because he’s become a quality, quick trigger three point shooter. The part I’m concerned about will be when James is sitting. Either Melton needs to prove he can run point or Maxey will have to have added a distributor element to his game this summer. If not, then our offense will be trash.
