If he signs a contract with another team Phoenix can only match it, I don't think they can trade him.

There are five basic options for a restricted free agent:

• Accept his team’s prior qualifying offer, play out the season and become a free agent the next summer.

• Accept his team’s maximum qualifying offer (where applicable) and play under that long-term deal.

• Negotiate a new contract with his original team that is independent of the qualifying/max qualifying offer.

• Sign an offer sheet with another team through March 1, which his original team has an opportunity to match (see below).

Negotiate a sign-and-trade if he hasn’t signed an offer sheet with another team.

• If there is no qualifying offer, contract or offer sheet signed for one year, the original team can submit a new qualifying offer and the player will be a restricted free agent the next summer.

I see this as a win for Miami even if we don't get Durant. Not a huge win. But one less team to worry about. Not sure why any big name player would want to go to the West. The top teams in the East would be Miami, Celtics, Bucks, 76ers.

Doesn't the player have to consent to a sign and trade?

Phoenix can’t include other players in the s+t so we win right?

Why would we want Durant when Millsap is a cheaper option?

He's a RFA he'd have to consent to the S&T.

Not correct. They can include other players. Problem for them is Ayton would be BYC.

Thats what I was wondering. If Brooklyn would be acquiring Ayton via s+t, no other player could be attached or what?

No, if the Suns match an offer tendered by another team (and accepted by Ayton), they cannot turn around and trade Ayton. Essentially, the contract is signed with whichever team and then the Suns can either make the contract their own or allow Ayton to join the other team. Once the Suns match, there is a moratorium (I think it is a year) before they can trade Ayton. This exists to stop teams from agreeing to a deals in bad faith and/or teams and players colluding to a deferred sign and trade.

So we need a third team to come in and play spoiler when free agency kicks off and offer him a deal

Giving up Bam + Herro + Jovic + 3 FRP for 34 YO KD and mentel midget Simmones?

Have you lost your mind?!

We just went to to the ECF, you're gutting the team's future and might not even make it better for next season!

Spoelstra would better use Simmons then any previous coach has. Also, having the whole organization behind Butler, Spoelstra and the Culture things could turn around for Simmons... at least enough to send him out for a boatload or another star.
