predict the Magic's depth chart on opening night

Post#1 » by drsd » Fri Jul 1, 2022 7:20 am

Orlando now has 14 players under contract, with decisions forthcoming for two more players (Houstan and Cannady).

In other words, the roster is essentially completed now.

What is your view of opening night?

Here is mine:
Cannady will make the team outright and Houstan will be a 2W player. Ross will be traded for a 3rd stringer combo forward and our favorite: cash considerations, to free up minutes for Okeke and Hampton.

Opening night will have these players in Magic blue.
Fultz/Anthony/Cannady
Harris/Suggs/Hampton
F-Wagner/Okeke/vet-player
Banchero/Isaac/Bol
Carter/Bamba/M-Wagner

(( I still think that if Isaac is 100% back, Banchero goes to the bench. I have Banchero starting only because I do not think this will be the case )).

I LIKE THIS TEAM

EDIT: Bol made the team and this is reflected above.

I'm right in line with yours, drsd, except I could see a re-engaged TRoss in the opening day lineup...
1)because he's really talented when he cares
2)his trade value is at bottom and a couple of months of meaningful contributions could remind the world that he's a Human Torch - to up his trade value and offers
3)he's not being moody and pouty since Banchero was picked...his reaction was really positive "that's what we need-excitement"
* I'm the eternal optimist when it comes to TRoss, but there's some basis for this...Paolo & Franz need shooters.

That's a pretty interesting, potentially deep lineup, IMO. Maybe too deep. Everybody can't get a fair shot...I want that BIG consolidation move too, but it's not clear yet who fits best.

Frontcourt is set both Hammond and Weltman confirmed it on air it will be Wagner/Banchero/Carter. They never mentioned backcourt apart from Weltman comment which you cant take fully literally imo.

Fultz/Anthony/Hampton
Harris/Suggs/Cannady
Wagner/Okeke/Ross Houstan(propably 2 way)
Banchero/Isaac
WCJ/Bamba/Wagner

I think Fultz/Harris, Anthony/Suggs give us the most balance among backcourt rotations. Defence, shooting, playmaking. Suggs and Anthony will have to fight everyday to earn starting spot. Ross and Hamptons role is unclear to me. I prefer to play Okeke over Ross even if we want to win every game. I prefer Chuma's defence and decision making, hope his shot reappears. Maybe we will want to showcase Ross but rotations are tight.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

100% agreement on everything you listed from me. Good mesh of talent distribution and skills among the two main lineups.

History has proven that if Banchero starts the year on the bench as the number 1 pick, he's a bust, so he better not be a bench player.

Lethal Shooter... as a shooting coach for the magic? not sure if true.... but if so... that's awesome that they are investing fully in our guys... and taking team management to different levels

Fultz/suggs/cole
Harris/RJ/cole
Franz/chuma
Banchero/isaac/mo w
WCJ/bamba/bol bol

I see 5 guards that all deserve the chance to play. My odd man out is cole. Only due to his defense. But he is a bucket getter. So I have him slotting in 3rd string for both guard spots. In the interst of lineup continuity and to give cole his opportunity I'd have him replace any of the 4 guys ahead of him in the depth chart. For example if Fultz went down or was sitting out for rest on a back to back cole would start in his place. Same with Harris. Part of my reasoning is I really like the suggs/RJ/chuma/isaac/bamba together. I see 4 really good on ball, perimeter and help defenders and bamba. Those guys could force turnovers and tough shots and be in transition a lot with bamba trailing for the 3.
I'm also assuming Ross is traded with this depth chart. If not he can sit on the bench and waste his time with dnp cd. Screw you for publicly asking for a trade. If you want out because it's the best thing for you and your career that's fine but keep it out of the media. When we're trying to build a culture of good character guys that believe in each other and playing team basketball and play defense having the franchises 16th all-time leading scorer demand a trade isn't ok with me. It's an insult that we've been through before and I don't ever want to see us go through it again.

So that's the depth chart if everyone is healthy and ready to go.

The contingency depth chart if isaac isn't ready opening day is similar with a couple tweaks

Fultz/suggs/Cannaday
Harris/cole
Franz/RJ
Banchero/chuma/mo w
WCJ/bamba/bol bol

Lots of defence on (some) bench units: Suggs, Okeke, Isaac, and Bamba would be a nightmare to score against.

Fultz/Cole
Suggs/Harris/RJ
Wagner/Okeke
Banchero/Isaac
WCJ/Bamba

Without Lopez, we might be one of the youngest teams of all time.

It’ll be Fultz/Suggs/Wagner/Banchero/Carter

I really hope so...I should say "I hope Suggs is our best choice to start at SG and not just honorary". I really hope he has a good camp and makes the leap 2nd year players sometimes do when the game slows down and the shots fall, fatigue and injury may have played a part too. In my mind, Harris is the best SG right now...but I don't want him to be.

What I like looking at these depth charts, our 2nd string is SO much better than last year.
could we really run out a 2nd unit featuring Cole, Harris, Okeke, JI and Bamba?
that line up had 184 starts last year for us. (the starting line has 253 starts)
Only 2 players are new in our top 10. And those are significant (PB & JI).

Depth chart aside, do the Magic have something brewing with this roster?

3-point shooting Bigs/7-footers!

WCJ
Bamba
Bol Bol
Paolo
JI

Most other teams have one, maybe two.

Is this anything?

Starting: Fultz, Suggs, F. Wagner, Banchero, Carter
Bench: Anthony, Harris, Okeke, Isaac, Bamba
Reserves: Cannady, Hampton, Houstan, Bol, M. Wagner
Two-Ways: Schofield and TBD

Thinking Ross will be moved before the start of the season.

I can see this lineup happening but with WCJ instead of Bol Bol, especially if our guards got injured like last season. Franz and Paolo can handle pg duties

Return to Orlando Magic
