Potential Assistants

Post#1 » by Heelsfan119 » Tue Jun 28, 2022 6:00 pm

Now that we’ve had the press conference and Clifford will be meeting with the current assistants, who do we feel will stay? Who could we see brought on?

whoever our shooting coach was under Borrego needs a lifetime contract. I don't think it's a coincidence that Miles, Terry, LaMelo, Devonte', and even Jalen and Cody all improved significantly as shooters under our watch

I think Jay Hernandez was the head of player development. I’d envision he’d stick around.

Hernandez and Iske would be 2 that I would bet we keep. Hernandez for sure is the one that I hope we keep

Clifford and Brett Brown both grew up in Maine and have been friends for several decades. Brown's Dad in fact gave Clifford his first real opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if Brown is brought in as the lead assistant.

Here's a cool article about their history if you're interested:

That's uninspiring. Very much like Clifford.

Corbin was a head coach before, he took over for Sloan in Utah. He's a solid pickup.

Jazz fans basically unanimously say he's a horrible head coach though. I'm sure plenty of bad HCs make great assistants to good HCs, it's not like I have any shred of confidence in Clifford as the head coach...

It will be interesting to see which of Borrego’s assistants stay. Both of the above have remained employed in the NBA, so they must have some value.

He's from Colombia, SC, played in the league for 15 years, and has tons of coaching experience. It's a good hire.

I’m sure Pelicans fans would have said the same about Monty Williams as well. :)

These were posted by Ty Corbin's children. His son Tyrell was part of our 2017 Summer League team.

I love seeing incoming coaches and their families having excitement, particularly when they speak of “coming home”. Obviously fans of the team. That joy is needed right now.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

This tends to fly in the face of the popular save-face narrative of Atkinson pulling out because he wouldn't be able to bring any of his preferred assistants, no?

Unless the coaches we wanted to retain are coaches that Atkinson didn't want.
