Brunson seems like a good locker room guy and he can definitely score, but he’s undersized and a scarecrow on defense. They basically just paid starting PG money for someone who is not a starting PG caliber player. The Mavs dodged a bullet on this one. If they would have signed him for a 4 year 55 million contract that they could have done earlier that would have been fine. But that is a bonkers contract.

Knicks fan and it looks like half your team came from us. We've always had a pretty good relationship. I was actually sorry to see Timmy and Frank leave. KP was a calculated gamble that almost had to be taken. We all hated KP for what he "did to us", loyalty wise.
I think not signing Brunson earlier, when you had the chance, was a colossal mistake (on Cuban), but it happens to all of us. The Knicks probably resign Mitchell Robinson, but he was in EXACTLY the same situation as Brunson. Knicks pushed it off and now are paying.
From Brunson's perspective it is clear - he wants to lead a team and be The PG. That isn't going to happen with Luka. The best thing you guys can do is to get a great combo guard (who plays high level defense) next to Luka. Brunson knows he was trade fodder if he stayed in Dallas. That was most likely the reason they didn't resign him, they were hoping for a superstar trade.
I'm happy with got Brunson for free as opposed to giving up the farm like Atlanta did for Murray. (And he is a bad shooter, but a great stats guy.)
I'm not even sure if the Knicks will offer Fournier or even a TPE now as it is in NY's best interests to make that 23' Dallas 1st round pick the best it can be. But to avoid bad blood, I'd offer Fournier. Brunson is an All Star on Defense compared to Fournier, but boy can Fournier shoot and he can create his own shot as well.
Lastly, Brunson is a VERY good PG. I don't see many NY fans having a problem with him. We haven't had a PG as good as Brunson in decades. He handles the ball on a string, is incredibly efficient at finishing and is a very strong (40%) 3pt shooter (albeit at only 3 attempts a game.) His defense is good, but he is relatively short so is going to get abused by taller guards. He tries but so does Fournier - only so much you can do with genetics.
Good luck to you guys. You are lucky to have Luka. Fun generational player to watch.
Dallas can only take back half of Brunson's contract in a S&T, so Fournier is not an option. Wouldn't want him on the mavs anyway, unless the Knicks took back THJ or Bertans...
As for the Brunson going to NYK, I feel like it's a f*** you burn bridges type move, they could've given Burks and a second round pick in a sign and trade to Dallas, but they rather traded Burks and Noel with a couple of second rounders to the Pistons.
Unless it's the mavs FO's incompetence that made them refuse such an offer, wouldn't surprise me either, really...
Also, wouldn't surprise me if the Knicks get docked a second rounder for tampering.
