OT: Highland Park 4th of July Parade Mass Shooting

6 dead, at least 24 injured.

Suspect still at large.

Anyone live in this area? I live about 20 minutes west, pretty darn close to my city. All surrounding cities have stopped all festivities today.

Another sad day in America, this one very close to home.

I live very close to the location and was getting ready with my family to go there when it happened. Absolutely devastating. Helicopters swarming searching for the shooter(s).

What a tragedy. People are going to become afraid to go to any kind of mass public event pretty soon.

My cousin’s family was there and they ended up stuck in a store for a couple of hours until the coast was clear. So scary.

We're a bit south of there, wife said all the nearby neighborhoods have cancelled 4th activities because the shooter is still out there.

I live in Highland Park and was driving home from the Botanic Gardens when two police cars whizzed past us. After we arrived home we heard wave after wave of police cars. We didn't know what had happened until our son who lives near DC texted us to ask if we were safe.

The description of the suspect fits the sad stereotype that we are becoming accustomed to. My two sons went through the local high school and I know the hypercharged emotions these kids go through, especially in a competitive school. Back then my sons brooded, yelled at their parents, and got on with things. Today, a tiny minority, perhaps goaded by social media, feel it necessary to do far, far worse.

It’s unheard of to hear about a shooting like this in an affluent Suburb like Highland Park. Even in the city it used to be safe to walk home at night even 10 years ago. Times have really changed.

Looks like they have a suspect and they’re trying to locate him. If it’s indeed him, then seems there were warning signs based on his social media history.

Don’t know whether to be angry or sad anymore. This is horrible.

They have a person of interest, but they've stopped short of officially naming him a suspect.

Since meaningful gun control is a non-starter in this country, they should at least be pouring more resources into figuring out what is going with young males in this country that makes them so angry and deranged that they act out in this way. It seems like 90% of these shooters are men under the age of 25. Something is going on in that demographic that is making this a commonplace form of rebellion. Maybe they need more outlets for their aggression, maybe schools/parents/society needs to do a better job with kids that are lonely, picked on, or isolated. So many of these criminals fit the same stereotype- loners with few social contacts. It should be a wake up sign- really should have been ever since Columbine, but it just seems to be getting worse.

As a society, we now idolize fame and attention. That's something new that's developed in recent decades and has really exploded with social media. It's a sickening of the spirit and leaves too many left out youth thinking that what they really need is to make a huge splash to became famous and notorious and finally get a piece of the pie. No value for human life.

Honestly I’m so tired of thoughts and prayers. It’s time to do something about this.

Didn't you hear? It's just a mental health problem. We're the only country with those problems apparently. Definitely not a gun problem.

It’s a nonstarter, the right will just say it’s not time to be political, they’ll blame antifa—minimal effort strategies that have already been used and are eagerly accepted by their indoctrinated supporters. The left will continue to fail to put on any substantial pressure on the subject, rinse and repeat.

I actually was able to leave the US permanently during the Trump administration, and I feel so fortunate. When I’ve been back, I’ve seen kids wearing those kevlar backpacks; just an appalling state of affairs and a ghastly thought to ever have to worry about a kid in that context. Especially for a nation not under siege in any way.

Look, I understand living in some rural area having a deer hunting rifle for sport or owning some sort of firearm as a deterrent if a bear is constantly trying to break into your house or trash for food, but the fact people feel the need for modular military grade combat rifles in the suburbs without any sort of requirement for certification is nuts.

Congress won't do anything. They're bought and old. They'll make it sound like they care and want to change things but nothing will ever get done.

The left has control of congress and still can't get anything done. The only thing you can do here is train yourself and others around you how to be aware of your surroundings, stay away from bad areas, don't get yourself associated with trouble and know what to do when you hear gun fire. You aren't going to get help from the federal government ever on fixing this problem both on the right or left. They're useless concerned more about their stock portfolios than the American people.
