Empathy isn't necessarily about emotion, it's about relating to the other party and thus understanding their needs best. The deal is supposed to be a compromise, and you can't compromise unless you fully appreciate where the other side is coming from.
Phone calls and Zoom meetings don't compare to business done in person.

Because you get cap space next year by doing so.

There is urgency for the Lakers to put a team together.
Nets have no incentive to trade Kyrie until the KD situation is resolved.
Still think its very possible other teams come in like Dallas once they realize they are not as good as they thought.
Not to sound arrogant, but imo if there was really any urgency on the Lakers part then this deal would have been done. It's no secret the nets had a problem with kyrie not getting vaccinated and missing all that time. Do folks really think the nets want to pay him $36 million just to send him home? Taking the Lakers out of it completely, the nets either bring him back knowing he'll be a distraction whether it's his attitude cause he doesn't want to be there. Some silly reporter asking the same questions after every game. The other option is pay max money for a guy to sit at home, or hope he doesn't get injured.

I think u just add more reason to use phone.
When ur a GM and u wanna make a deal of this size, u wanna be as logical as possible rather than making decisions based on emotions like giving the other side an edge cuz u feel bad for him/her, or refuse any compromise cuz u were stuck in traffic for hours on the way there and feeling extra grumpy.
i think GMs like to see other GMs face before making a deal. Yes theres skype etc.... But sometimes they just want that face to face experience. I think its a good sign a deal could be done. If they are wiling to meet face to face

They’ll get cap space next year anyway if they do nothing. If they’re just salvaging for a pick, where’s the benefit if they have to include Joe Harris to get it? They could get a better deal somewhere else for those two.

No they couldn't Joe on 2 year deal at which he will make 38m. A older shooter coming off injury isn't hot commodity at all. Hes been in trade rumors before and has had no takers.

Seems to me at minimum they need to send a couple second rounders. Probably should have to send a protected 1st.
Where do you listen to Eric Pincus?, Always enjoyed his interviews at the old site hoopsworld.
He was on local LA radio…570 I believe. Talking about his BR article.

Exactly.
WB isn't valuable as an expiring to the Nets, who already have an expiring contract in Irving. I don't get the 'positive expiring contract' logic being pushed by some Laker fans.

Well in this hypothetical deal the Nets are sending out the two clearcut best players by a pretty good margin, so the draft compensation should still primarily be coming from LA who would be moving two overpaid and borderline useless players...
That doesn’t apply when you have two guys the Nets clearly are trying to dump. To any other team in the league not named the Lakers? You generally pay to get off those contracts. The Nets do not want Kyrie back and there is no market for him, and they clearly want to get off Joe Harris’s second year of his contract. Less negative value players doesn’t make them a positive. Sure the Lakers should give up more but Nets clearly should be contributing some to that cost. 80 million in tax savings doesn’t come for free.

Well you’re half right. The reason they’d include Joe Harris is to save on luxury taxes. I’m pretty sure both Joe Tsai and Sean Marks are sick of dealing with Kyrie’s bull, but they’re trying to squeeze a pick out of it which only the Lakers are possibly stupid enough to pay.

Why the hell would the Lakers take Kyrie? He barely plays and thinks the earth is flat. Lakers are doing Nets a favor by taking him. If Kyrie walks, they end up with nothing. Also a lot of LAL fans would actually not care if Lebron walks.

@TheLakersReview
“I think there’s a slight divide right now where LeBron wants Kyrie and some people internally might prefer a Myles Turner/Buddy Hield type deal.”
⁃ Jovan Buha while discussing the Lakers, Kyrie Irving, and Jeanie Buss’ tweet she made on 7/3/22
Maybe before the Thomas Bryant signing i could see the divide...but not now. Def behind LeBron on this one . Especially if we get Harris or Seth back who i value more than Buddy .

I believe there are other franchises/fans that are salty because the Lakers are among the premier places for FREE AGENTS, and incorrectly conflating that into the trading sphere. Also, the Lakers are consistently used by agents/players as a pawn, to pressure teams to up their offers, to retain/sign said player. I think this also adds to the Lakers reputation, which is outside their control.
I agree a lot of fans are salty about the Lakers free agency advantage, which is real. You see that same saltiness in the other sport I follow for the NY Yankees.
But I don't think you can separate the trade sphere from free agency all together. As an example, New Orleans didn't want to trade Davis. If they had been the Los Angeles Pelican, Davis never would have asked for a trade to the New Orleans Lakers. The fact the LA Lakers have access to trades like that, even if team succeed in playing a bad hand well, is a very real advantage and over decades that matters. Now you can squander that advantage like my Knicks have but it is a real advantage in free agency and trades.
Now I'm someone who doesn't care about that advantage. Easy for me to say being from NY, critics would say. I care deeply that a small market team with (i) good management, (ii) and luck can compete. the NBA system provides that. Utah is basically screwed on the free agency front. No one wants to play there. But they've still fielded very good teams for decades playing in a crappy market. I understand the resentment of Jazz fans but it really doesn't bother me.
A completely level playing field were there is no advantage to playing in NY over Salt Lake City is unreasonable in a sport were a substantial amount of revenue is local. That is only viable in sports without local revenue streams and even then you need very weak unions. I see no reason players should leave $$$ on table for rich owners.

No it wouldn't. Because the Nets dpn't want Westbrick.
Nets have nothing to lose. Lakers have LeBron to please or he might bolt in FA this summer.
Nets paying Kyrie is no worse than paying Westbrick. They probably send him home too.

This summer as in the summer we are currently in? Nah.. he is under contract. It's next season ( 23/24 ) where LBJ plays is currently up in the air.
Cheers.
