The Knicks have renounced Ryan Arcidiacono’s cap hold, source tells
@TheAthleticNBA
, a sign they will use cap space to sign Jalen Brunson. They could still technically use cap space and do a sign-and-trade, as they did with Evan Fournier and the Celtics last summer.

And why would we do that? What's in it for us....Bob Ross wrote:None of that necessarily means that the pick is going anywhere. It could be taking protections off of it so it unlocks the Mavs to use future picks. It could be the Mavs get next year's back for an unprotected pick the following year. That pick could do a lot besides just go back to the Mavs

So they traded a first for cam to then trade him as a salary dump rather than waiving old man Taj?

I don't think the Knicks would want to wait until 2024, because it would give the Mavs another offseason in 2023 to find someone to give them Brunson's production.
If I were the Knicks' front office I would tell the Mavs: remove the 2023 first round protection or we'll sign brunson into our cap space and you get nothing.

Edit to clarify: under the assumptions that the Detroit trades go through and a Fournier s&t is simply a one player add on to Brunson to the Knicks and the Knicks-Detroit deals
So would this give the Knicks any way of...oh...say...signing Colin Sexton along with adding Brunson or give them any room under the cap to absorb another teams contract?
(((106 / 3.7)/2) * 1.25) + 0.1= 18.005405405375,
So the Mavs could treat the deal as trading Brunson for Fournier. On the other hand, from the Knicks point of view it would be a non simultaneous trade of Fournier alone and would generate an $18m trade exception that they could use as into which they could sign other players.

The person from that tweet probably didn't notice Taj's contract could easily be waived to get Brunson his $28M+.

wtf are you all talking about? we don't give up assets. we would be doing the mavs a favor if we make a s&t.
we can outright sign Brunson AND Hartenstein with no Taj and just Mitch' cap hold.

Jake says on the callin he expects Knicks to keep shopping Cam and Evan. You don’t aggressively shop people the. Just stop. Could possibly be in Jalen Brunson sign and trade. He did say there is talk about Mavs getting their 23 but not realistic which I agree.

Thibs has a lot of pull!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d rather trade cam and 1st instead of just waving Taj!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the Knicks see the possibility of trading that 18 million TPE & either Rose or Cam for a 28 million dollar player of some kind?
Not that I have any idea who that could be. Maybe at the deadline instead of now?

nah, you can't combine TPEs with other salaries.

Ah, I was wondering.
F*ck it then. 17 million is the treadmill zone, where the player is too expensive to be a bargain, but not expensive enough where they are likely good.

You can't trade those exceptions. All you can do is sign players into the space afaik. (And there's no additional 125% + 100k.) I don't even think you can combine them with your cap space.

But you don't have to spend the exception on a single player. You could sign as many as you like if the combined salaries add to less than 18m
