Melo was not a good influence on KP. He wouldn’t be a good one for RJ, Obi, Cam, and the rest of our youngns either. All Melo showed KP was how to be an iso ballhoggin diva like himself.

This is a fun thought, but Melo would 100% undermine our team. Theres no LeBron or Dame here to keep him in his place. The only guy we have with that kind of clout is Rose, who comes off the bench, doesnt talk, and misses half the games.

Get rid of Julius first and then maybe we’ll talk, but the Melo era should stay over. Dude isnt Jeter. He doesn’t deserve some cringy farewell tour.

Bingo! We had a Rookie who came in saying "I'm going to turn those boos into cheers". Then he turned into a bratty Melo-type.

It worked out for the best. But Melo is just a bad influence if you want to be a winning team. That's never the player you want for the long haul.

3. Cause he wasn't Lebron James and couldn't take JR Smith and gang to anything

Those are the top 3 reasons why fans dislike him.

Or because he was a chucker who hogged the ball. He only wanted to play his way and only played defense or passed when he felt like it. Like how is it possible he averaged over 4 apg only 1 year of his career considering how much he dominated the ball?

The way he acted during Linsanity really rubbed fans the wrong way too. He clearly wasnt thrilled that it was taking attention from him and idc what his fanboys say. We all had eyes.

Melo and the team did well in 12-13 just like how Randle and the team did well in 20-21. It only worked for them because they got free reign to control the whole offense. As we’re seeing with Randle now once you get that kind of leash you never want to give it up to play team ball. Melo only wanted to win if he was The Man, like Julius now.

Melo was our most talented player since Ewing no doubt, and yea his supporting cast wasnt the best, but he was very frustrating as a fan because it always seemed like he was on the verge of getting it, yet never did.

Getting what? Becoming Lebron James? Why can't fans just admit that. You guys are looking for Lebron James. He wasn't. If it was that easy to "get it" then everyone would be Lebron level wouldn't they? You guys say that like it's easy. So because he wasn't able to get something that was so easy he's a peace of crap. Fans were already on him for not being Lebron before Linsanity. And how well has Linsanity worked for anyone else?

Dude... why is your argument here always "Because he's not LBJ"? You make it like it's some be-all and end-all to the argument.

No chit he's not LBJ. But that doesn't mean fans should be content with 2 playoff appearances and only 1 playoff series win in 6 years (not including his trade year). This was a guy you gave max money to, your leader, and somebody you traded your whole farm for.

It's 100% "Because Melo wasn't a 2010 free agent". Because "Knicks traded the whole farm for Melo". Which is valid. Because all those Team USA players at the time signed shorter term deals expiring in 2010 so they could maybe player with each other... Except for Melo. Melo was greedy and signed a more lengthy deal. Which I get, but it just shows he values other things more than winning.

And there wasn't one player that I can honestly say played better with Melo. At least with even Amar'e, we saw Felton looking like a legit PG and team basketball. Melo just brought a complete stop to team ball. And he was very unsupportive after Lin's over-performance. Lin could have been a serviceable young player moving forward. Instead, we got Jason Kidd shooting 15% in the 2012 playoffs.

And yeah, Frank stans were annoying. But end of day, he was on a rookie deal, only on the team for 4 years, and wasn't playing 35 MPG and eating a third of the teams salary.

Even if this was tank year, I don't think Melo is worthy of a cringy Dwade-esque "Farewell Tour".

We had one playoff series win under Melo, largely due to all the vets actually playing defense and showing leadership so Melo only had to score. It wasn't a team built to last. That team was very reminiscent in Randle's and Knick's 2021 season. Which isn't a compliment btw. They were both seasons were you knew nothing was going to carry over into the next season.

And we barely made the playoffs in 2012, mostly because undrafted PG who was making like 700k that year came out of nowhere.

Is this what we are celebrating? 1 season? Why are our standards so low? And why do some fans get called out for not having such a low bar lol?

I keep seeing Melo and Ewing comparisons. But there is no comparison. Ewing gave it his all even with two shot knees and continually carried the team.

Melo is more in line with the likes of Marbury. Inefficient. Poor leadership. Poor defense. Doesn't make teammates better. Traded the house for them.

Anyways, if I had to guess, it's probably just a discussion about a 1-day contract before his retirement.

Easily. I think his son has the chance to be really really good. Maybe not as good as his dad but I can see him having a huge impact in college and in the NBA.

I go down the Linsanity wormhole about once a year. I'll watch full games, highlights of the winning streak, and I've watched most of Jeremy's interviews. He and Melo never had a problem with each other. Melo let the NYC media get all up in his head and it affected his game. You could see how tense he was in games trying to be the "good" teammate or trying to be a "leader". He did slip up once when he called the poison pill a "ridiculous" contract which it was but I think any animosity was directed at the Rockets for poaching. And on Lin's end there is no way he could turn down that contract or play in the playoffs fresh off meniscus surgery with no monetarial insurances given to him by the Knicks.

It was one of the more exciting times to be a Knicks fan.. anyone who says otherwise is lying to you and themselves. it ended bitterly and Melo got caught up in it. But that Lin/Shumpert/Fields/Jeffries/Chandler line up with Novak and Walker off of the bench was a fun squad to watch for those several games.

Anyway, if Denver doesn't retire Melo's jersey I don't have a problem with the Knicks retiring it.. the guy should have his jersey retired by someone. I think Denver does it though.

Players like Allan Houston, Sprewell haven't got theirs retired so I don't see Melo's getting retired. And biggest of all... Bernard King's was never retired. And this was a dude averaging 30 points on +50%. Better stat line than Melo with the same amount of playoff success,

Knicks were already on the verge of making the playoffs when Melo requested a trade. Then they were swept by the Celtics.

2012 was saved by Linsanity. Knicks make the playoffs and get 1 win.

2013, Knicks make it to the playoffs led by Melo.

So basically, one playoff appearance. That's not something to pay tribute to imo. And it's not consistent with the Knicks' criteria.

It's not unheard of to have players make the Hall of Fame and not have a team retire their jersey.

Off the top of my head... Grant Hill, McGrady, Ray Allen. Dwight Howard will likely make the Hall of Fame but probably won't get his jersey retired.

Jokic does wear 15 for the Nuggets. So it will be interesting.

Knicks retiring Melo's jersey is just rewriting history imho. It screams of desperation. Instead of just owning up to the franchise being pretty much chit since Ewing retired, we would be glorying Melo's 6 years and 2 playoff appearances as if that was some successful era.

It was one good year...

Hate to be picky but it was 3 playoffs appearances.
I will only cherish the wins and ignore everything else, because that's the only way to survive as a Knicks fan.

Orlando Magic don't retire jerseys necessarily, but they have some sort of Hall of Fame.

Shaq, Penny, Nick Anderson, Darrell Armstrong, and Tmac are all on it.

Portland has number 30 retired for two different players.

I'm wondering if Denver would do the same with #15 after Joker retires? Retire it for him and Melo?
